So, Diageo is changing it's MOQ's and cutting many route to market customers off from direct supply. While this may seem like a challenge for wholesale suppliers aiming to bring brands like Smirnoff and Gordon's to customers at a cost effective price, this could actually be an opportunity for a huge change in the status quo. Long have there been artisan distilleries, producing high quality spirits, trying to compete in the 'premium house pour' category. There have always been local alternatives for pubs, bars and restaurants that are just slightly more expensive than the established, global brands of Diageo, now could be the perfect time for businesses to try something a little different. Hensol Castle Distillery has it's Benjamin Hall range of gins and vodka, truly distilled in our 17th century castle in South Wales, ready to step into the void and I can guarantee that there are many other businesses across the country in the same position. #smallbatch #artisan #supportlocal #spiritsindustry

It keeps on happening. A wine shop in Boston is keen on purchasing some wine for resale, but sorry to say, they cannot be helped as the state has a strict three-tier system and wholesalers will not clear small orders like this from craft producers. It's a terrible position to be in, especially in the USA in 2024. Wholesale Associations may celebrate these defeats, but they have no answer to the issue, and in doing so, they constrain the market's growth. Shame on the state Legislators for allowing it to continue! Fortunately, there are modern business processes that could allow these transaction to happen. A quick reminder for the 21st Amendment - Repeal of Prohibition. The beverage alcohol industry is seeing progression with the three channel system (TCS). No longer is the three tier system the only way. 21st century rulings have made it so small producers (95% of the market), can modernize their sales channels and bring creative products to the American consumer. There's lots more to do in this area but progress is being made. It all starts with educating your legislators on these modern sales channels. Don't wait for antiquated organizations to do it for you. A great place to start is to support the folks at the Craft Wine Association (CWA). If your brand sells one cocktail per month in one bar, you need 12.5* to 17.5** bars to finish one bottle every month. Multiply that by 6 to finish one case. Now think differently: If you get that same bar to sell two cocktails per night, they will finish one bottle in a week (US) or nine days (EU). That is if it's a base spirit. If it's a modifier, amounts will be smaller and take longer. Distribution alone is not enough. You must build rotation. * In the US, a bottle is about 25oz (75cl), and a serving is 2oz. ** In Europe, a bottle is 70cl and a serve is usually 4cl. https://lnkd.in/ezbjCw-3

On the day Foodservice Equipment & Supplies magazine releases its 2024 Distribution Giants Study, M&A activity strikes again in the dealer community as Singer Equipment Co. purchases Mississippi-based Hotel & Restaurant Supply. Interesting deal, for certain. Will this spark more dealer-related M&A this year? Only time will tell.

The taps are opening at more Ontario retailers & c-stores. ☝️CHEERS! Most of the changes have been discussed for years. I did my undergrad degrees at Bishop's University in Quebec where beer and wine are available at nearly every c-store and gas station. Ontario was just beginning to consider changing it's laws way back then! Craft brewers, distillers and wineries have all been requesting more flexibility and are getting it, most notably The Beer Store no longer having a quasi-monopoly on distribution. Brands win through requirements for local, reduced fees and more options. Retailers win by being able to offer the products. Consumers win by being able to make one fewer stop in their shopping trips. While this might mean less traffic, the LCBO remains the only retailer selling high %, specialty and/or prestige and typically largest selection so don't see them hurting too much! Of course increased ease of purchase isn't good for everyone. Research and real world data show increased access leads to increased negative health outcomes. There will be an increase in funding for "social responsibility and public health efforts"...what that means exactly I'm not sure. In some markets the upcoming changes would result in lower prices however we already have minimum price requirements and the actual production costs require most brands selling well above these points. I'd be curious to know how the non-alcoholic selection changes as a result given the growing number of consumers who want to mix and match, if not wanting the 0% option entirely. Retail sales of lab-grown chicken are now underway in Singapore By Dan Flynn on May 16, 2024 The back-to-back bans on the making or sale of cultivated meat in Florida and Alabama are getting answered around the world in Singapore. That’s where GOOD Meat begins the first retail sales of cultivated chicken, a product called GOOD Meat 3. It’s being sold at retail at Huber’s Butchery in Singapore under a partnership involving GOOD Meat and Huber’s. I don't view this recent turn of events as an incitement on the long term viability of the no-alc wine space. Rather it reinforces that the no-alc space cannot currently exist as a "stand alone" option. The "hook" is at the end of the article, stating that, "the majority of consumers that drink non-alcoholic beverages also consume drinks with alcohol." The Achilles heel of Boisson's business model was not allowing the consumer to freely trade across standard/non-alc wine options. Others will quickly learn that the category demands shelf presence, and that consumers will shop across categories as flavor profiles for NA wines continue to evolve. https://lnkd.in/gJYPrRZe
