One of the most important acts we must take as environmentalists is reckoning with the history of slavery and racism within the environmental movement. How can history inform our approach to examining and studying land use within ecosystems? I had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Suzanne Pierre from Critical Ecology Lab to discuss subjects often ignored in academic and environmental spaces. When I was studying environmental science, I remember one professor talking about how environmental degradation was done towards the environment via industrialization, but what it failed to illustrate was who were forced to work in horrific conditions, being deprived of access to economic justice but also security and safety. This is why it is important for us to acknowledge America's racist history and how the benefits of green spaces we see today were not merely found but formed on the foundation of oppression and exploitation. 🚨 The U.S. National Science Foundation, together with the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, is investing $16M in 10 new projects under the Partnership to Advance Conservation Science and Practice. These projects will apply basic science to conservation efforts, addressing urgent needs across various species and ecosystems. The outcomes will have broad implications for biodiversity, policy, and economic impact. "The unique partnerships this program creates forge a roadmap to broader conservation action by uniting the skills, expertise and tools needed to address the most urgent threats to our natural world," said Susan Marqusee, NSF assistant director for biological sciences. This week 21 partners of the More4nature project convened at IHE Delft for a three-day kick off meeting. They discussed: 👩🔬 strengthening the capacity of existing CSIs 👨🔬 supporting partnerships between CSIs and authorities to shape policy monitoring 🛠️ developing and testing tools to validate data obtained from CSIs 🌳 making CGD available as a node in the EU’s Green Deal Data Space 🤝 involving Fab Labs and Living Labs to co-create concrete and immediate pro-environmental citizen and community actions to promote compliance with environmental policies. The meeting ended with a field trip in the Biesbosch nature reserve to celebrate International Wetlands Day. https://lnkd.in/eUrXZ8Fp Citizen Science Initiatives (CSIs) have a pivotal role to play in collecting valid and relevant data and producing knowledge. However, there are barriers to the uptake of valuable citizen generated data (CGD).
