Click the link below to read reflections from a member of the Rosetta Reitz's Musical Archive of Care (2023-2024) project team! "With Pride month underway, many in the Duke community might be thinking about their identities and personal connections to the LGBTQ+ community, while others may be seeking ways to understand, reflect on, and celebrate queer history and culture. Four graduate students working towards graduate certificates from Duke’s Gender, Sexuality & Feminist Studies program detail their current research projects—which are all engaged in various ways with queer studies—and offer some reflections on what “Pride” means: here and elsewhere, past and present, as presence and absence, and through grief and joy." https://lnkd.in/eQWDR-Ei

The Guardian's recent article on the situation of Women in Music is both encouraging and concerning. It is a reality that women are achieving impressive milestones in the music industry when, for example, we see a record number of female artists topped the charts in 2023 and their songs accounted for almost half of the top hits of the year. However, important challenges remain, as women are still underrepresented in positions of power and face discrimination. Meanwhile, at lower industry levels, for instance, no woman has ever won "Producer of the Year" at the Grammys, indicating a lack of women in crucial production roles. True change requires a collective effort from industry leaders, artists, and fans to eliminate discriminatory practices and advocate for gender equality. #musicindustry #grammyawards #womeninmusic

Rep. Chip Roy's recent speech, on the anniversary of 9/11, was not only inappropriate, but also dehumanizing to the trans community. To suggest that the presence of a transgender music teacher somehow makes America not worth defending is beyond offensive. It implies that my very existence as a trans person diminishes the value of our nation. This rhetoric is dangerous and contributes to the marginalization and discrimination that trans people face every day. Roy's speech conflates unrelated issues like immigration and LGBTQIA+ rights with national security in a way that scapegoats vulnerable communities. As a trans person, I am a human being who contributes positively to society, just like cisgender people do. The idea that my identity somehow weakens the fabric of our nation is not only false but ignorant. This kind of hateful speech from those in power emboldens discrimination and lead to real harm against trans people. It's infuriating to see such bigotry, especially on a day meant to unite Americans. Our diversity - including gender diversity - is a strength, not a weakness. Rep. Roy and other GOP members need to educate themselves about trans issues and to stop using us as political punching bags. We are your neighbors, coworkers, and fellow citizens. We deserve respect and equal treatment under the law, not to be held up as examples of why America isn't worth defending. I hope voters will remember these harmful words from Roy and many others, and hold them accountable for this divisive and dehumanizing speech. #TransLivesMatter #Humanity #VoteBlue #StopTheHate #Discrimination

"The music industry is still a "boys' club" where sexual harassment and abuse is common, MPs have warned in a report." The report concludes that misogyny is endemic and lists recommendations, some aiming to address the system and some addressed to men and organisations. What the news article doesn't do is provide quantitative evidence of the level of male dominance in the UK music industry. This is something that Women in Ctrl has done exceptionally well. Its "Seat at the Table" 2021 report found that women are underrepresented at the top seat of the music industry trade bodies while black women are locked out of power. 27% of CEOs and 9% of chairpersons across 11 UK industry bodies were women, of whom none were black. 80% of the Music Industry Board members were men and all members were white. It is this structural male dominance and the social norms which underpin it that makes it easier to objectify and 'other' women. This in turn leads to the misogyny and discrimination reported by the MPs. Change must happen and Women in Ctrl can advise on many of the solutions. Hi Despite the very weak internet from the depths of the Tacoma forests in the U.S., I did my best for this presentation. Unfortunately, there is still some audio noise, but hopefully, it may still be helpful...This lecture is structured around three key historical periods in Iranian music: the Constitutional Revolution, the Pahlavi era (before the Islamic Revolution), and the post-1979 Islamic Republic period. Each of these periods reflects different social and political climates that have significantly influenced the role of women in the music industry ...And I believe that despite the strict regulations, women both inside and outside of Iran have continued to find ways to express their music. Movements like the 'Women, Life, Freedom' protests have highlighted the ongoing struggles for gender equality. Music plays a vital role in these efforts. I think that the most important need today is to create a dedicated space for preserving, recording, and organizing these resources in a clear and audio format on accessible online databases. This means establishing a well-defined music archive for the history of Iran from various perspectives, in collaboration with different fields of the humanities...
