Having designed and delivered multiple simulation events in my career as an educator of nurse practitioners, I’ve long been beating the drum that we don’t fully deploy this modality to its fullest extent in APRN education. I’m deeply gratified to see this tide turning! I’m especially fond of OSCE-type evaluations (both formative and summative). There is immense educational value in a well-designed and thoughtfully implemented encounter with an expert Standardized Patient. The biggest gap I’ve seen in these events is properly preparing students before, during, and after the event. Simulations are inherently stressful, and can be very anxiety-provoking. Intentionality on the part of faculty to make the simulation as positive as possible is a key to success, alongside quality scenario design and a high degree of organization.
