After 40 years of working on the road, I secured a job three hours away from my children and grandchildren. This is a significant phase in my life. ARCO Murray in Downers Grove, IL, will be greatly missed. I have many positive things to say about this company. They treated me like a family member and did not micromanage their Superintendents, unlike many companies today. While not all companies are like this, many smaller companies tend to hire Directors of Field Operations with little practical experience, who often arrive on-site expecting to find mistakes. This is one of the reasons I speak so highly of ARCO Murray. Their executives call ahead before visiting a site to ensure availability. Few companies operate this way anymore, and if you find one, it is advisable to stay. Over the past 40 years, I have witnessed significant changes in the industry, some positive but many negative. My advice to younger Superintendents is to thoroughly evaluate a company, just as they evaluate you. If a company has a high turnover rate, it is best to avoid it, as you may come to regret it.

TJ, on the left, started with Hanssen over 10 years ago as a teenager without previous employment history. He was spotted by the company Chaplain at the time sweeping one of the factory floors in a way that didn’t reflect any form of cleaning. TJ was asked by the Chaplain “What are you doing?, because you’re not sweeping, you’re just moving dirt around?” TJ hadn’t been taught to sweep, he was taught to occupy time but not take personal pride in the work he produced. The Chaplain took the broom off JT and systematically showed him how to sweep, meanwhile teaching TJ some principles of work ethic, being a man and taking responsibility for his own destiny. TJ was fascinated that someone was so passionate about sweeping floors, not understanding at the time, it was more than just sweeping; it was to develop an attitude that would secure his future employment prospects. Like TJ, many go through the motions which is not really acceptable as a work ethic only because they are not taught otherwise. It’s great to hear TJ laugh today about some simple yet invaluable lessons he’s picked up from a broom 🧹 on the factory floor. 10 years later TJ is still employed and developing life skills along the way. He’s just been assigned to Aurora for a season as part of the finishing team and we all know that Toppy (on the right), the site leader, is all about work ethic. #workethics #reliability #mentoring #nextgeneration

People Developer | Talent Development | Sales Trainer & Coach | Keynote Speaker | President Castlebar Chamber | Lecturer p/t
I stayed in #Dublin last Thursday night, and after doing a few hours on the laptop Friday morning, I pulled back the curtains to snow 🙃 These unplanned snowflakes made me late. I couldn’t stop off to buy a book I wanted. There was no time to pop into my favourite cafe for a coffee or go back to buy that green scarf I regretted not buying for the St. Patrick's parade in #Castlebar. So, it got me thinking about our plans for learning and development. We set out our plans for the year, and by Q1, something happened, and we didn't do what we had planned. Before we know it, Q2 will be nearly over, and we will be into the summer holidays, and it's too late to start. The business suffers a small percentage, and someone says, “We will be better next year!” Sounds familiar? Don’t let another year or month go by without taking action and developing your team. If you are not up to date, you go out of date, which means out of business! #sales #training #talentdevelopment
