While the design was fun on this one, I'm happy to report that it is fully compliant with Section 508 ADA Accessibility laws, and if you look "under the hood" you will find proper "coding" of which I have been learning of late. It's a whole new world for we designers who now need to fold in tagging, alt texting, anchoring, styling, threading, and other related skills into the complex mix of ideation, design, illustration, layout, print and digital production. Remember this post from last week? I’m following through on my promise by giving you my top 5 tips for how leaders can build trust with their teams: 1️⃣ Create an environment where team members can fail, learn, and still feel supported throughout the whole process. 2️⃣ Always be improving communication. Evaluate the quality of top-down, horizontal, and bottom-up communication. If any one channel is suffering, you’re suffering. 3️⃣ For every one of your “needs improvement,” recognize 2-3 “wins” or “small victories.” Build people up, don’t break them down. 4️⃣ Show employees you’re working on yourself by requesting and accepting feedback like a champ. No one is perfect, especially you. 5️⃣ Start thinking out loud and in front of others. Let people understand how you think and what you value when making decisions. Don’t expect blind #trust from your team without shared experience first. Have you ever been part of a team where #trust was already built upon arrival? Meaning, team members showed up on day one knowing the person to their left and right had their complete #trust. The people who answer “yes” are often thinking of a sports team they were part of, a military unit, or something similar. Why is this? Well, sports teams and military units create #trust through shared experience. Think about preseason football camp for aspiring football players, basic training for future military personnel, or the academy for police officers. It’s these shared experiences that induce all kinds of collective responses, one of which is #trust. I’m not trying to convince you to send your teams to the paintball course if that’s still a thing. And, I’m certainly not advocating for you to sign your team up for a Tough Mudder event. Rather, I want you to understand that #trust is rarely given blindly by team members. Instead, it must be built. When we talk about truth and reconciliation, we look for solutions that go beyond lip service, performative allyship and tokenism- thank you Indigenous Services Canada | Services aux Autochtones Canada for doing the work beyond talk! If we talk the talk and not yield the power to minoritized and underserved groups to lead, then we are simple gate keepers of oppression. I would love to see all human serving organizations unapologetically tackling Anti- indigenous racism, Anti- Black racism, Islamophobia and other faces of racism that manifest on micro, macro and mezzo levels to perpetuate systemic oppression. In the spirit of communal solidarity with Truth and Reconciliation as the center, may we always remember that Diversity is an inherent given, inclusion is a choice that requires action and equity is a legal right, which entails continued co- unlearning, co- creating, relearning and fair redestribution of resources. We need to move from image focussed EDI and embark on the messy and muddy work that is needed to end cycles of intergenerational trauma and systemic harm.
