Colour has the power to transform spaces. In care facilities, it takes on an extra significance in creating the right environment for diverse needs due to aging and declining health. For example, did you know that as the eyes age, its lens becomes more opaque, impacting the eye's ability to perceive colour and contrast? Our Senior Colour Designer, Dawn Scott, and Specification Manager at AkzoNobel, Tony Westgarth discussed this and more on the ThirdAge.Design podcast including taking part in an insightful chat about how colour can be a critical tool in creating uplifting and enjoyable environments for older people. 🎧 Take a listen here: http://spr.ly/6041aa7GU

We had such a great time talking to Journal of Biophilic Design about the evolutionary journey that has hard-wired out brains as humans to react to the natural rhythms of light and colour - and what this means for the physical environments we surround ourselves with. 🌿 "Light is one of the main guiding forces to the world around us," "Potentially 80% of how we interact with the world around us comes from what we see." From the way certain wavelengths can influence our mood and productivity, to the importance of shadows and contrast in creating a sense of harmony, the science behind lighting design is complex and often overlooked. How can thoughtful design turn spaces into personalised sanctuaries that help us focus on what truly matters? In the third instalment of Universal Design Studio's Inside Out podcast series with Design Anthology UK, host Elizabeth Choppin explores the theme of 'Choose' with our Design Director, Suzanne Gaballa, and Laura Lee (DBE), CEO of Maggie's Centres. In this conversation, they dive into the power of thoughtful design in shaping our decisions, particularly in spaces like Maggie's Centres, which are built to provide comfort and clarity for those facing difficult times and therefore choices. As Suzanne puts it, "Design should enable personal choice by creating spaces that influence our decisions in ways we often don’t realise. The best design eliminates distractions, offering a seamless environment that allows us to filter out noise, think clearly, and make intentional decisions." Why do we feel an inherent need to create, and how does that drive still influence our lives today? In this episode of our 'Inside Out' podcast series with Design Anthology UK, host Elizabeth Choppin is joined by Sonia Tomic, Creative Director at Universal and Corin Mellor, Creative Director at DAVID MELLOR DESIGN LIMITED, to explore the importance that making holds today. Together, the three examine the enduring value of handcrafted, well designed objects and delve into how tactile, physical items continue to enrich our lives, even as digital technology takes centre stage. As Sonia reflects, "Making used to be an intrinsic part of daily life. It was once a necessity — to create your clothes, prepare your food, and shape your environment. With less technology and fewer conveniences, it was all up to you. Over time, we've become disconnected from that process — and, in a way, from ourselves." From ancient cave paintings to contemporary design, tune into the episode to hear how 'making' remains central to human expression and self-connection: https://lnkd.in/eDFee-YW Listen on Spotify: https://lnkd.in/edDXr5wF Listen on Apple: https://lnkd.in/eGbsZkYw
