Climate Resilience & Infrastructure Specialist | Public Health Advocate | Disaster Response Expert | Championing Sustainability, Public Health, and Infrastructure Protection | Leading Shield and Castle Consulting
In the wake of Hurricane Helene, we’ve been in deep discussions with community officials, policymakers, and leaders in impacted areas. One critical pattern we’re seeing is the broken through-line between having data, understanding data, and operationalizing that data. Flood warnings and predictive models existed for many of the areas hit hardest, but the data was either poorly communicated or simply shelved. Thus many communities felt and were unprepared for the amount of rain Helene brought. At Shield and Castle Consulting, we believe data is only as powerful as the action it drives. We aim to be the bridge—collecting, analyzing, and explaining data to policymakers, while helping craft actionable operational and mitigation plans to protect our communities. It’s time to move beyond just having the information and start making informed decisions that lead to resilient futures. #resilience #dataforgood #climateaction #climateresilience #disasterpreparedness #disasterrecovery #HurricaneHelene #floodmitigation #climatechange #communityprotection #climatedata #adaptation #ShieldandCastle"

As climate-fueled extreme weather increases, more Americans are moving into disaster-prone areas. Hurricane Helene is yet another reminder of the urgency to tackle the climate crisis, while making our homes and businesses more resilient to climate disaster.

While we might have only seen the beginning of this disastrous hurricane season in Florida, it seems important to me to look at the long term effects. People will be moving away from the South of the USA and many other regions worldwide, either permanently or seasonally. And this will change the landscape as much as climate change itself will. This article from the The New York Times gives an alarming outlook on what this will mean for communities and their demographics. But people do not move or settle based on rational choices alone. What about the social ties, the local lifestyle, the culture of a particular area? We can not treat people like shipping goods and human settlements like housing zones. As much as we might like people to make rational choices to get out of harm's way, neither we nor our fellow citizens are engineers of our own lives. We live them. Therefore we can not continue to treat climate change and it's devastating effects as a technical problem or an infrastructural challenge. It's a human and therefore emotional and cultural challenge and we need to help people prepare for transformation in profound and healthy ways. How do we learn the skills needed for flexibility and mobility? #acaseforculture #climateadaptation #culturalclimateadaptation #hurricaneseason #florida #climatemigration

🌀🌧️ Hurricane Helene devastated the southeastern U.S., flooding over 100,000 buildings and causing an immediate $20 billion in damage and economic disruption. Yet, the real blow may lie ahead, with economic losses expected to surpass a staggering $100 billion. In this article, we analyse the role of climate change in intensifying Helene, the devastation in the aftermath and the potential long term financial consequences, likely to last for years. While human-caused climate change is creating stronger hurricanes, we argue that skyrocketing losses aren't inevitable — if appropriate action is taken. With the right strategies, communities and businesses can protect lives and mitigate damage to properties, infrastructure and economies in the face of increasingly powerful hurricanes. Curious how?
