Today a major outage is bringing down thousands of companies worldwide. Reports of major disruption from APAC airlines, US emergency services, French banks, UK TV networks, even stock exchanges being affected. Likely hundreds of thousands of machines are down, stuck in a "Blue Screen of Death" loop. This is apparently caused by a single update of a security software called CrowdStrike. (and is compounded by an apparently unrelated incident at a major cloud provider...) My point is not blaming that company. Incidents can, and will, happen to any company large and small. But this incident will be memoralized as a textbook example: - Testing is not a "nice to have" but has to be an integral part of your software development strategy (cc Damien Hoffmann ;) ) - Mono-culture in your vendor landscape is nice from a cost cutting perspective, but if one of your key vendors has an issue, your whole org is down: was it worth the extra 2% discount on the contract? https://lnkd.in/euKjDqEz #test #crowdstrike #security #cicd

The world doesn't need new or great ideas. The world needs to go back to basics! All these companies that #meltdown today with the #CrowdStrike update, need to bang their heads in shame; right now. Automatic mass updates on critical systems? What planet are they living on? They all ask ChatGPT-sourced questions during their technical interviews. They enjoy using jargon and complex words but the fundamentals are not there. Most people who work for IT companies are smart individually or taken in isolation. But they are collectively dumbified by inept management, senseless PowerPoints, politics and meeting invitations from people trying desperately to justify their existence by wasting everybody's time. I have been there. My soul nearly died before my body! My only merit is having left that asylum before it was too late. I don't even blame #CrowdStrike. When it comes to updates, incidents happen. Many vendors did it in the past. That's not news. But the way they allow critical systems to be updated and changed without control, shows abysmal lack of common sense and IT governance. As I write this, I've got 12 servers running in different data centres. If they failed over something so trivial, I wouldn't be able to look myself in the mirror. Enjoy your weekend, amateurs!
