Whilst in-house DBA support might seem like a great fit for your project needs, it can pose significant challenges in the long run. You'll have to pay hiring costs and find someone with extensive skills, then if you want to scale, you'll have to repeat the process again. I found a job listing here for a Senior Database Administrator, from a company I don't recognize - that's fine, there are lots of companies out there. It lists a position for a Lead Database Analyst and then says it's for a contract DBA. Technologies required, "SQL Server, Redshift, AWS, etc." The "etc" is the best part. The description is basically a copy-pasted job from any other DBA listing, and it looks like the poster put all of two minutes effort into it. Nothing is consistent except the lack of detail. Why would I devote 6 months or years into a position that is lacking basic information? Spell correctly, use complete sentences, advertise and WOW ME. Sure there are a thousand applicants for every job, but you want the top 1% don't you? Motivate me to write out a proper cover letter and justify my application.

🤚Are DBAs even allowed to go on vacation? ❗Honestly? No - Database Administrators are NOT allowed to go on vacation. It's like an unwritten rule at growing SMB/SMEs that only have 1 DBA 🤯It leads to burnout, turnover, and Disaster Recovery well... DISASTERS How do you solve it? Not by hiring! You can't afford another FTE and besides there isn't 160 hours of work for them to do every month. There's a better way. Preserve business continuity by supporting your staff affordbly.
