Drove out of the way for Chick-Fil-A in Atlanta and had an incredible experience that got me thinking. People do business with those they know, like, and trust! This past weekend, I went the extra mile to visit Rodney Johnson’s Chick-Fil-A. Here's why it was worth it: 1. **Know the Owner:** Rodney, a friend and brother in Christ, owns the location I visited at 650 Decatur Village Drive. Knowing him personally made the experience special. 2. **Like the Owner:** Rodney and I used to spend time together before he moved back to Georgia. We built a bond over meals, kids playing together, and shared moments. 3. **Trust the Owner:** Rodney's integrity is unmatched. His trustworthiness is evident, making it easy to choose his Chick-Fil-A. Let's call this the Rodney Effect! Reflect on how well your clients know, like, and trust you. Honored to be part of the Greater Raleigh Chamber Emerging Leader's Program! This week, we had the privilege of hearing from David Meeker, co-founder of Trophy Brewing Company and Carpenter Development Group. David's journey is truly inspiring. Despite facing some of the worst possible timing – from the 2008 financial crisis to the 2020 pandemic and everything in between – his passion, drive, and unwavering commitment to the Raleigh community have helped him weather it all. What struck me most was David's perspective on sustainability. As a 40-year-old at this stage in my career, his words resonated deeply, especially regarding long-term vision and personal sustainability: 1. Be Consistent 2. Have a 30 year plan 3. If you have kids under 2-3, throw everything else out 4. Workout every day (even if it's just a walk) 5. Work when others aren't working 6. Have a good balance with nighttime events 7. Have a wind-down routine, focus on good sleep 8. Relationships! Personal Reflection: I often find myself focusing on the week ahead, struggling to see far into the future. David's insights were a much-needed reminder to look up and out. His tips reinforced that it's okay to say no, be relentless with my time, and continue pushing hard – but without burning out. This perspective shift is invaluable for maintaining momentum and achieving long-term success. It's clear that Trophy Brewing and Carpenter's future is bright, thanks to David's resilience and vision. His story is a testament to the power of perseverance, community engagement, and sustainable practices in business and personal growth. You don’t have to attend Friday beers if you don’t want to. I never ever attended a Friday Afternoon Beer Social (FABS) in law school. Not even once. The last place I wanted to be on a Friday afternoon/evening was loitering at the law school. Instead, most weeks I hopped the bus across town to babysit my brother’s kids so him and his wife could enjoy their Friday evening bowling. Articling was a bit different. Friday afternoon beers was not optional for students. The long-standing tradition was for the students walk together to the nearby liquor and convenience stores to purchase a modest selection of beer, coolers, ice, and a few salty snacks to serve in the boardroom around 4 p.m. It was a welcome opportunity for us to connect and catch up on our workloads and what we saw going on at the firm. Most of the associates would gather for “Friday Snacks”. Some partners were “regulars”; others never joined. People would come and go. File-related conversation would gradually turn to firm legends, and laughter would take hold. By 6 p.m., the room would clear. After articling, I attended regularly for a while, and as the years went on, I attended less and less, choosing to get an extra two billable hours on my timesheet or spend those precious hours with my family and friends. I know that some partners encouraged attendance at Friday snacks, but I can’t say that I ever saw anyone’s career or partnership admission limited because of a failure to attend. Some associates seemed to enjoy closer relationships with certain partners because of it, but my relationships with associates were never impacted one way or another by mere attendance at Friday Snacks. There are a lot of things you “have to” do in private law practice; attending an alcohol-centric Friday afternoon social is not one of them. Do you agree?
