A major change in the approach to sustainable planning is taking shape with the introduction of biodiversity net gain regulations. They aim to ensure that natural habitats are protected and improved when new developments are undertaken. This will help combat climate change, safeguard the environment, and encourage green construction practices. Taking prompt action is essential. According to The Biodiversity Intactness Index (2021), by the Natural History Museum, global biodiversity has already dipped below safe thresholds. The research reveals the UK has only half of its entire biodiversity left, ranking it within the bottom 10% of the world's countries. The 2021 Environment Act mandates a 10% uplift in biodiversity for development sites, setting new standards for environmental responsibility.
