“Let’s sell through VCs” sounds like a great idea, but you have to look at it from the VC’s perspective. Does your product help early-stage companies grow rapidly? Does your product help growth-stage companies scale? Does your product help late stage companies improve their margins? You may be riding the wave at the next market leader, but you have to see the VC as your customer. They care about valuation, growth, and margins. They also care about reputation and dealflow, but those are a future byproduct of portfolio success. Their companies need help evaluating new products that help them take advantage of market tailwinds or emerging tech. Does your company do that? Really? If so, I suggest coming to the table with simple math, a compelling growth story, and market insights they’re unlikely to find anywhere else. Today, I attended a session in London led by Vance D. on Techstars' expansion into early-stage SaaS. The contrast in investment between the U.S. and EU is truly striking! A couple of interesting points: - VC investment as a percentage of GDP is three times higher in the U.S. than in the EU. - Over the past decade, the U.S. has raised over $800 billion more in VC capital than the EU. Focusing on leading the expansion into the U.S. market is a smart move. #techstars
