AS YOU TRAVEL THIS YEAR Know that mastery and world-class start where your comfort zone ends. Unless you are willing and able to sweat and bleed more during training, you cannot survive the reality of the actual battle. Resolve to keep your head high when tough times hit you this year, know that they won't last. Savour the process, learn and grow through it, form value-minded alliances, be humble enough to bow to superior belief systems, and above all while striving to become a better version of yourself, take one day at a time, take little steps, don't just plan but act, fail, and go hard again. Ideas are worth nothing unless they are backed by intentional application. The smallest of steps taken towards application is far better than the grandest of plans and intentions. Chose to be among those who will pursue relentlessly world-class and mastery, value and productivity, efficiency and professionalism. Don't be what Robin Sharma described when he said: "From a young age, we are programmed into thinking that moving through life loyal to the values of mastery, ingenuity, and decency should need little effort. And so, if the road gets tough and requires some patience, we think we're on the wrong path... We've encouraged a culture of soft, weak, and delicate people who can't keep promises, who bail on commitments and who quit on their aspirations the moment the smallest obstacle shows up" Happy New Year.

I used to out-fish my father. Actually, I did so every time we went fishing. Now, this may have had something to do with the fact that I refused to hook live bait or take a fish off the line, thereby diverting his own efforts at catching a fish or two. He claimed I’d simply out-smarted him. But you know, I like fishing. The calmness of it. The idea that our ancestors have- in some form or fashion- carried out this same endeavour. And I loved my father’s resulting fish-fry at the end of the day…but not because of the food itself (Daddy was always a little too proud of his cooking!). I enjoyed that we had navigated an experience together: From his wake up call luring me out of bed with a lunchbox filled with “sausage sammichs”, Kit-Kats, and RC Cola, to trekking down to our favourite fishing spots, listening to his stories while we waited, intently watching as he cleaned the catch, and then listening to him sing while he prepared the fry. Somehow, it always felt like we’d just accomplished something really cool. I don’t think many of us stop to take note of the small cycles of accomplishment in our lives. We celebrate the big milestones, but not the invisible processes that did all the heavy lifting. I often tell my students around midterms: “This is when you need the most support and celebration. When you’re tired and overwhelmed. Not at graduation after all the work has been done.” I think we celebrate the wrong things, ya’ll, and so much of it becomes obligatory and performative. As companies prepare for their holiday events, awards are handed out. But was there celebration and support in the process of earning the award? And, is it entirely possible, the people getting the recognition are like that wee Mandolen, diverting everyone else’s energies to gain the leg-up? The one being measured on an arbitrary metric rather than all the behind-the-scenes effort that truly made the cycle complete? Winning a race represents a momentary triumph that should be celebrated and cherished, as it signifies reaching the pinnacle of success at that particular moment. However, Allison wisely highlights the fleeting nature of this victory, reminding us that the following day, we start anew with fresh challenges and opportunities. By recognizing that the "meter goes back to zero," we are motivated to continually push ourselves, eager to progress further and better ourselves every day. This mindset encourages personal growth and development as we continuously learn from our experiences, adapt, and elevate our performance to new heights. Thus, the importance of working to be better every day lies in seizing the precious moments of achievement while consistently seeking growth and striving for excellence.

My True Award: A Journey of Self-Recognition Hello, As I put pen to paper today, I am reminded of the countless nights I spent gazing at empty walls, yearning for the weight of an award to hang proudly upon them. For years, I toiled tirelessly, fueled by the hope that one day, my efforts would be acknowledged with a tangible symbol of recognition. Yet, as the years passed and the accolades remained elusive, doubt crept in. Through the trials of childhood, navigating the uncertainties of adolescence, and the challenges of adulthood, I questioned my worth. I wondered if I would ever ascend to the heights of success I envisioned. In the depths of my despair, I came to a profound realization: the true award was not something external to be bestowed upon me by others, but rather, it resided within myself. It was the culmination of every battle fought, every obstacle overcome, and every lesson learned. From the earliest moments of my existence, I have been a beacon of resilience and determination. Though my efforts may have gone unnoticed by the world, they have not been in vain. For I am a testament to the power of perseverance, the embodiment of success in its purest form.
