I am thrilled to be joining Gaurav Banga of Balbix on stage this week at BlackHat USA 2024 at their inaugural Black Hat AI Summit to discuss how companies can leverage AI to mitigate their cyber risk exposures.   In May, Verizon Business released its 17th annual Data Breach Investigations Report which analyzed over 30,000 incidents and more than 10,000 confirmed data breaches across 94 countries. The report revealed that 68% of all breaches involved a non-malicious human element. Bad actors are taking advantage of phishing techniques and inadvertent human errors to obtain valuable information and data. In the past year, there has been a noticeable increase in the use of legitimate #cloud services by sophisticated malicious actors, including #nationstate actors. These actors leverage the efficiency, reliable infrastructure, and ease of deployment offered by cloud services. More importantly, the use of these services allows their activities to appear legitimate, helping them evade detection. Malicious actors are utilizing these platforms for command and control, deploying malware, and conducting large-scale data exfiltration operations. This talk will discuss specific actor groups, including the background of each groups' capabilities and motivations and their favorite cloud platforms. In addition, despite their sophistication, these actors occasionally exhibit interesting operational security (opsec) failures and oddities, which will be reviewed.
