You are data driven & find yourself staring at a big number: "Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max reported losing 2 million subscribers after relaunching HBO Max in May as a new app combining content from HBO and Discovery." You take another sip of coffee and move onto other "more pressing items" on your agenda like ... Deciding to sell a lot of the very best of your new-found HBO business' content to Netflix, while replacing it with reality TV stuff the HBO segment of your customers cannot seem to stomach. Nevertheless, you take another sip of your coffee and chalk it up to "go figure" Bottom line: Warner Bros Discovery investors should be very uncomfortable with the status quo at HBO Max. I will cancel my annual subscription soon. How about you? #hbomax

Since 2019, anyone at home hoping to watch recently released movies from the indie studio A24 needed to tune in to Showtime Networks. But that exclusive output deal ended recently. And for months, I've been wondering where A24's movies were headed next. Well, mystery solved. Today, Warner Bros. Discovery announced they have reached a new multiyear deal bringing A24's theatrical slate exclusively to Max, HBO and Cinemax. Over the course of the deal, Warner Bros. Discovery's streaming and cable subscribers will get access to over a hundred A24 titles. That includes everything from A24 classics, like "Hereditary" and "Ex Machina," to recent and upcoming releases like "The Iron Claw." No word yet on how much Warner Bros. Discovery is paying. But at first glance, the deal makes a lot of sense. Having spent the past few years working on "It's Not TV," my book with John Koblin about the history of HBO, I see a lot of parallels between A24 and HBO -- two New York-based cultural institutions that rose to prominence by betting big on edgy, auteur-driven programming. Watching A24 movies on HBO and (ne HBO) Max seems like a natural fit, and I'm guessing that diehard A24 fans and HBO subscribers will dig the new arrangement. It will be interesting to see the lift in subscribers for Disney+ based on the Taylor Swift effect. I expect to see more "streaming stunts" like this to drive acquisition or reactivation of customers in the future. Not sure how sustainable this is and what impact it will have on churn but definitely feels like a growing theme (see e.g. the NFL Playoff game on Peacock) (story analysis provided by Perigon).

Disney+, Hulu, and Max Are Bundling Their Streaming Platforms https://ift.tt/hlX54Zm The great consolidation of the industry continues as Warner Bros, in a bif to make money, will now attach Max to Disney and Hulu, creating another bundle that feels exactly like cable. The combined content will allow purchasers to watch ABC, CNN, DC, Discovery, Disney, Food Network, FX, HBO, HGTV, Hulu, Marvel, Pixar, Searchlight, and Warner Bros in ad-supported or ad-free plans. The Disney and Hulu merger of last year helped both companies, with subscriptions rising. Adding Max will give more options of r adults on the platform, and allow them to have access to both Marvel and DC Superheroes on the platform. There's also the idea of live sports, which Hulu already had, and Max shows through a TNT partnership. The move makes a ton of sense for Warner, who is trying to make as much cash as possible, as rumors swirl Zaslav could be selling the studio. Time will tell where more consolidation goes, but as we've pointed out, this is basically cable again. Let us know what you think in the comments.
