𝙐𝙧𝙗𝙖𝙣 𝘿𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙜𝙣, 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙎𝙤𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝘾𝙤𝙝𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣: 𝙇𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙤𝙣𝙨 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙑𝙞𝙨𝙝𝙖𝙖𝙣 𝘾𝙝𝙖𝙠𝙧𝙖𝙗𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙞 Often, those of us in the #mobility and #transport sectors tend to overlook how deeply our work is influenced by the unique characteristics of each region: from urban planning, demographics, and economic trends to cultural and social factors. These factors deeply influence how we approach transportation systems and mobility solutions. That’s why I wanted to share this insightful interview with Vishaan Chakrabarti, FAIA by Mimi Kirk on Bloomberg CityLab. His reflections resonated with many of the challenges we face in mobility today. Here are five key takeaways: 🚆 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁-𝗢𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗗𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 Chakrabarti argues that urban densification is essential for addressing both housing crises and climate change. They create opportunities for people to come together, strengthening community ties and social cohesion. 🏗️ 𝗔𝗱𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗨𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 Chakrabarti points out that urban planners are working within the constraints of historical decisions. Decentralization and the Creation of Multiple Hubs: A Path to Smart Cities Decentralization and the creation of multiple urban hubs have become a global trend in the development of smart cities, ensuring a fairer distribution of services and opportunities. International examples like Paris, with its "15-minute city" concept, and Melbourne, with the creation of local hubs, show that it's possible to promote well-being, reduce commute times, and minimize environmental impact. In Brazil, the proposal defended by Guilherme Boulos and Marta Suplicy for São Paulo in 2024 aims to transform the city into a model of modernity and urban justice, decentralizing public services from the center and ensuring opportunities are closer to residents. Other candidates, such as Bruno Covas in 2020, also highlighted the importance of decentralizing service offerings to address urban inequalities. Decentralization is essential for any city that aspires to be smart. By distributing services, we reduce traffic, decrease the carbon footprint, and create a more sustainable and inclusive urban economy.
