What do you usually base your holiday destinations on? Weather? Beaches? Cost? Well if you're a holidaymaker in APAC, it's likely your taste buds that are guiding your choice. Recent data reveals that 88% of holidaymakers in APAC select destinations based on restaurants, with 83% choosing hotels near culinary hotspots. This is particularly true among HNWI Indian travelers, 89% of whom are planning to spend more on travel in the next year. As luxury vacations become more inspired by gastronomy, tourists appear to be traveling to find culinary experiences they can’t get anywhere else. Among Indian travellers, 72% feel that dining out is one of the most pleasurable parts of vacationing, while 45% are intrigued by show kitchen or food theater-based concepts, pointing towards a growing understanding of eating out as an event, like a concert or show. Talisker. The Isle of Skye. I was here, at the weekend, for my Birthday. Amazing. A dram of Talisker and possibly the best Oysters ever, in their incrediby good, lochside, 'pop-up' restaurant, which, after talking to the slick, knowledgeable and professional staff running it, I understand, will shortly be a permanent 'thing'. Scotch Whisky Tourism, par excellence, you'd think. HOWEVER. And it's a BIG 'however', getting to Talisker, from the main road, at the Carbost Junction, on Skye is easily a journey on the worst public road, in Scotland. My friend likened it to "driving on the surface of the Moon", when he recently visited Talisker. In Scotland, we can't have the latest in fabulous Scotch Whisky Tourism, if the 'Scotch infrastructure' is broken. It's more (or rather, less) than this. It's non-existent. It's not just roads, its the lack of a dynamic Website, it's the totally fragmented approach and no cohesive accumen, where you're NOT told about ANY of the other 145+ Scottish Distilleries that 'aren't in their Gang'. It's actually really simple. Instead of just having a 75%, (some would say, totally exploitative) Tax on the Scotch Whisky Product, we need to retain some of this vast wealth, (from a hugely wealthy Industry), in Scotland, to give us a holistic, joined-up approach, to Scotch Whisky Tourism. Incredibly, there's not even a Scottish budget for this! We have a Marine Tourism Strategy and Budget but NOT ones for Scotch Tourism. Totally Bonkers. The Scotch Whisky Association and others are very quick to tell us about the countless £billions raised by Scotch, for the 🇬🇧, every year. They're not as fast, (or really forthcoming at all), on the total lack of Budget for Scotch Whisky Tourism. Among other things, it has to be forthcoming, to help create and nurture a Scotch Whisky Tourism network, in Scotland. This would have to be, creating a digital, 'tick-box' Distillery visiting system, more fantastic food and drink experiences, include opening up places AND of course, fixing the roads, to get to them. Scotland and Skye was ALREADY busy at the weekend. It was only March and it looks like 2024 will be yet ANOTHER Record, Scottish Tourism year. Whither wine tourism (and all its elements) in 2024? Back in 2020 when Covid was raging and closing all types of businesses, there was a frightening banner headline in the Healdsburg Tribune (about which I posted here), predicting: “The Collapse of the Wine Tourism Economy.” After the reopening year of 2021, we bounced back with a blockbuster 2022. Last year was not so good, depending on the sector or individual experience (wine clubs etc.), but it could be said, depending on the metric, to be down 25% to 40%, part of that a continuation of a decline in winery visitations for the second year in a row as well as for the industry at large a continuing leveling off and downtrend in wine consumption. There was speculation about roaring travels to Europe. Hey, I was in France and Italy myself for a month. This year my experience and contacts with wineries and tour operators, so far is showing a slow start, actual as well as forward bookings. More European travel? This morning I was at The Prisoner Wine Company with my private party of three (from TX), when two CWT buses pulled up, with 56 people in each bus. The over 100 passengers were owners and franchisees of Outback Steakhouse. A good sign, or troubling for a pick up in visitor traffic for 2024 and the future style of wine tourism in the premier wine country of Napa and Sonoma?

Gastronomy has always been strongly linked with tourism because when people travel to new areas, they pay great attention to the local culinary habits and traditions. As an intangible cultural heritage (ICH), gastronomy has become one of the primary motivators for tourists’ choices to visit specific destinations. Thus, following this important influence of gastronomy on the tourism industry, there arose a need to study it and uncover some of its salient contributions to tourism development to enhance the transformation of Nigeria’s tourism industry. Therefore, to achieve the aim of this study, the researchers adopted the exploratory research design using key informant interview methods as a data collection tool. Secondary sources were also utilized to enable the drawing of coherent and concise conclusions. The research reveals massive gastronomy or culinary traditions in Nigeria. It is worth noting that these unique cuisines have not received the attention they deserve from all stakeholders, including academics, tourist professionals/practitioners, government organizations, and the general public.
