Day Two of the conference is continuing with more lively discussion and sharing of experiences and ideas. Delegates have been engaging in smaller groups and in plenary about the many issues facing people and communities on the continent and what part ALE can play in addressing these issues. Today we had an interesting panel discussion about Climate Change, Agriculture and ALE. Neila Rassaa from the Insititute of Agriculture and Higher Education (Tunisia) presented on the topic followed by an interesting discussion from all the participants.

How can traditional knowledge and indigenous practices be integrated with modern agricultural techniques to enhance resilience to climate change impacts? What research gaps exist in understanding the effectiveness of climate-smart agriculture interventions in building farmers' resilience, and how can these gaps be addressed to inform policy and practice?

One of the first major shocks of climate impacts worldwide will come to our food systems as we pass the 1,5 C threshold. Parallel harvest failures in multiple food-basket regions are not excludable on the time horizon of decades but less than a decade. However, we should know it better...
Pushing for next frontiers in climate, energy & development policies. With all actors onboard! CEO @Climate Strategies
The increased unpredictability of weather patterns is causing strains on agricultural systems worldwide, making it critical to develop effective strategies to support farmers and safeguard food security. To advance this effort, scientific information needs to be easily accessible to policymakers. Here at Climate Strategies we are taking this issue head-on, in a great consortium (National Observatory of Athens, AgMIP – Agricultural Model Intercomparison and Improvement Project at Columbia University, Meteome & FACETS) with our Augures! project, which integrates climate, crop, and economic modelling to assess the impacts of climate change on agriculture. Augures! aims to provide decision-makers and farming communities with actionable insights to reduce the risks of crop failures and create resilient food systems. On October 16th, we’re hosting a hybrid workshop in Athens titled "Anticipating Agricultural Climate Shocks" where we will discuss the project’s multidisciplinary approach and review our preliminary results in the context of Southeastern Europe. It is the first step to develop a service for policy-makers to be able to anticipate and batter mitigate impacts of climate change on agriculture and food systems. So I can hardly think of a more relevant issue for any decision-makers!!! If the above interests you and you’d like to join the conversation (in Athens, virtually or get involved in our initiative), please get in touch and/or register your interest at the link below: https://lnkd.in/eNie2YEt More details about the project: https://lnkd.in/eUjzKnaA Kudos to European Climate Foundation for your commitment to this super-relevant undertaking (Jozsef Feiler, Oleksandra Kolmogortseva).

Here’s my full conversation with Mr. Arif Goheer, Principal Scientist at the Global Change Impact Studies Centre (GCISC). We discussed the impacts of climate change on agriculture, the distinction between human-induced and natural climate factors, and climate-smart agriculture. This episode contains insights on climate variability, greenhouse gas inventories, and effective climate communication strategies. 🔗 Watch the full episode here: https://lnkd.in/dSGT3akv #ClimateChange #ClimateScience #Agriculture #Sustainability #GreenhouseGas #ClimateAdaptation #EcoAnxiety

✅On the use of climate indicators for agricultural planning in Europe. 🌎 Given the urgency of climate change, the integration of climate projections and indicators has become imperative for sustainable agricultural planning. Europe, with its diverse climatic regions and intricate agricultural landscape, is a representative study area for this purpose. Accordingly, this study presents a methodology for downscaling and representing the most relevant indicators and projections for agricultural planning across Europe. Based on a detailed literature review, several indicators were retained ranging from the impact of temperature fluctuations on crop yields to anticipating shifts in precipitation patterns affecting water management strategies, and beyond for tapping into the intersection of climate science and agricultural resilience. This aspect is one of the pillars of the AgriDataValue project and ambition. #agridatavalue #agriculture #Europe Learn more at the following link 👇https://lnkd.in/d7g5DHP3
