At times I wonder why some organizations require a Visual Merchandiser when they don't even know their importance and does'nt value their existence. For example if they require travelling for store visits, market surveys or vendor. meets then all other departments starts gossiping and spreading rumours like VMs are just travelling around to have fun and hardly have anything to do.What they dont see is their hardwork, their creativity, patience, skills which creates an overall impact of look and feel of the store and also brand identity. And when they don't travel and sit in office then they are tagged as VMs have nothing to do in office rather than sitting and doing timepaas. There are certain events and meetings where VMs are not even included to be a part of it whereas all other departments are invited. There are certain activities like visual executions, new store openings, preparing BOQ etc which VMs don't decide. Would really like to know from VM community if they face such challenges ever. #visualmerchandisers #VM

Remote Visual Merchandisng Director (VMD)? Get your best talent by allowing the VMD to work anywhere. Is tech going to change where visual merchandising team live? If you want to maximize your profit through visual presentation, then you want your Visual Merchandising Director in stores and less in office. If you allow them to work from anywhere, you can get the best talent anywhere and don’t have to pay for relocation expense. They can fly into main office when needed. They can do zoom meeting anytime of the day. With technology changing so fast, I see this as the best future of the Visual Merchandising and your your company.

Sometimes I have to look back at my visual merchandising portfolio to remind myself how far I've come, and how I had to take my career into my own hands to get it done. I spent nearly a decade as assistant managers and then as a store manager in specialty retail stores. After having kids I really wanted to return to retail and find a District Management position. I couldn't get hired without "experience". No one wanted to take a chance on this retail management obsessed lady. No one wanted to look at my potential. No one wanted to invest in me. So I bet on myself and created my own opportunity. I started freelancing as a management consultant. I was training, educating, supporting boutique owners. Some of them didn't have any retail experience at all, but I created an entire Store Management training program and I put them through it. I trained and supported their teams. I also created an entire Visual Merchandising training program and put them through that, and here's the kicker: I did it all virtually! I never set foot in one of these stores (mostly because of COVID) and look at what we were able to accomplish! Look at what someone without any district experience and a five year gap in her employment did! Retail applicants are more than just their resume. We are more than a label. Now I have five years of MULTI UNIT management experience and I have a visual merchandising portfolio, but corporate retailers are STILL rejecting me left, right, and center without even an interview. We're still only looking at what someone hasn't done and the experience they lack instead of focusing on what they HAVE done and the skill they bring with them. Maybe we should start looking at and investing in potential! It would be so easy to get down about this but I'm surprisingly SUPER EXCITED about whatever brand I do get hired by because I know they will understand value, we're gonna crush it, and we're gonna do amazing things! I can't wait to get back in stores, to really roll my sleeves up and get in the thick of it with store teams. I'm looking forward to building a portfolio five times this size and looking at it often with pride! This is just a reminder to stop selling us MOTHERS (with an employment gap) short! WE CAN DO A LOT! We WILL do a lot if you hire us or not, but you're gonna want us on your team! I am currently still seeking a district management or field visual merchandising job in the state of Florida! I hope we can work together soon, but even if we can't, don't forget, the sky isn't even the limit. You can do great big things!

Did you know Visual Merchandisers is just a fancy word for decorators? Agreed? Why not? It’s quite simple – all we do is arrange for a few materials/objects and decorate the space, it’s not that hard. Recently, my work was brushed off as mere decoration for a jewellery exhibition (that too by an ex-colleague). It’s eye-opening how little our community’s efforts are truly recognized here in India. I was shocked at how misunderstood my work was, even after 15+ years of being in this field. If you’ve also felt this in this or any other field, trust me, you’re not alone. Visual merchandising is often reduced to creating beautiful backgrounds, hanging ornaments, and flashy displays. But let me set the record straight: it’s so much more than that. As visual merchandisers, our role is to bridge the gap between marketing’s storytelling dreams and retail’s cold, hard numbers. It’s about weaving creativity with business acumen to deliver results that speak volumes while bringing a brand’s vision to life and creating that customer experience. But until people understand the depth of our craft, we’re in for an uphill battle. Share this post/comment down below if you’ve also experienced your work being misunderstood 👀🙋🏻♀️
