Department for Work and Pensions (DWP)’s Post

Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall reacts to today's Labour Market figures from the Office for National Statistics showing that real wages are continuing to rise. The Government's Get Britain Working Plan will drive up opportunity in every part of the country.

  • Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall: Today’s figures are more evidence that we must Get Britain Working, which is why we're relentlessly focused on driving up opportunity and driving down barriers to success in the country. With real wages continuing to rise we're working to boost living standards and get the economy growing as part of our Plan for Change by reforming Jobcentres, joining up fragmented local support and guaranteeing every young person has the chance to be earning or learning.

So how's about not cancelling all universal credit because someone refused to claim state pension as all that does is increase the tax rate for PAYE and as for the "minimum wage" fine if you don't mind sleeping on the side of the road

Wages may be rising but they are still lagging behind rising costs!

It’s positive news, but will only be felt in certain fields, especially London. We need to either get the ‘Cost Of Living’ under control or get the Minimum Wage to rise? In comparison to the rest of the western ecomonic sphere we are starting to look like the poor people of Europe. I work in the Public Sector, and when you see Doctors & Train Drivers getting 20% and you get 5% instead on the Minimum Wage you feel embarrassed for the Government and their lack of public judgement. In truth Reeves painted herself into the corner by promising not to raise the three big taxes, so everyone is paying for her poor judgement. In summary, raising Employers NI contributions has stalled the job market in recruitment, so it’s cheaper for employers to slightly raise wages and spread the workload instead of hiring another employee!

Nothing changes - ideas and initiatives are started, great plans are made but it is all playing around the edges of the problem. The loss of skilled jobs, the change in earning potential, someone who can get followers has massive opportunities but those with professional skills essential to the community earn a fraction. Entertainers can earn more in a night or week than a Nurse can earn in a year. The value of a skill is limited, but the value of the thrill or promise of celebrity is alluring
