Within general insurance, pricing seems to be most popular and interesting area for actuaries to move into (this is what I’ve found to be the case anyway). Excellent post to read. Not necessarily because it clarifies what an actuary is (Avi does a great job digging deeper), but because I see so many companies, businesses, departments, leaders and employees FAIL at being able to translate their value proposition. What Avi does here is magical... Do actuaries price risk? Yes...but is that their job or role? If we stopped there, the answer would be incomplete. Actuaries do price risk...but its the how and why that create the value proposition. By building degrees and ranges of certainty from the uncertainty of risk, actuaries allow business leader to make better and more confident decisions. To take it one step further, consider and Insurtech that sells a cloud solution B2B to the insurance ecosystem. When I ask about their value proposition, they always tell me about their product. But use Avi's simple definition of an actuary as a guide. SaaS Insurtechs MONETIZE their solution with their product, but the solution is more abstract & profound than the product. Your credibility rises the more you can focus on the solution...the real job to be done, and not at-first-glance job to be done.

What is an actuary?   Many people say actuaries price insurance or calculate how long people will live.   But that's not really what an actuary does.   An actuary gives its key stakeholders the power to make informed decisions by giving certainty to uncertainty.   Actuaries usually deal with things that have a lot of risk and uncertainty, like insurance. Imagine trying to make critical decisions without a clear understanding of the potential costs and risks involved.   In comes an actuary. Actuaries use a mix of quantitative and qualitative techniques, combining actuarial methods, statistics, predictive modeling, along with incorporating their business acumen, to estimate the true future costs. By estimating the true future costs associated with uncertainty, actuaries equip decision-makers with the knowledge they need to move forward confidently.   Once key stakeholders have the knowledge of the true risks and costs associated with the uncertainty, they can make important business decisions with peace of mind. Privileged to have been able to co-present at the Actuaries Institute All Actuaries Summit on the "Key Developments in External Audits, Divergence from External Peer Reviews, and Important Implications on Professional Actuarial Practice" In our presentation we explored the following key areas of recent developments in external audits and external peer reviews: 1) The role of an external auditor, an auditor’s expert vs. an audit specialist, and how this impacts reserving, provisioning, and other finance function practices, including the work of the primary actuary (or the Appointed Actuary in the case of insurance companies). 2) Emphasis of an external audit on the performance of procedures (an action not an outcome) and identification of misstatements, how this has diverged significantly from the traditional emphasis of external peer reviews on the overall reasonableness of the primary actuary’s advice (an outcome), how the overall reasonableness of the actuary’s advice does not automatically lead to the absence of misstatements. 3) Current auditing standards, in particular ISA 540 and ISA 620, and how they translate to requirements on both the auditor (e.g., the audit actuary) and management’s expert (e.g., the actuarial reserving team or external consulting actuary). 4) The need for documentation and evidence-keeping, how this differs from traditional understandings of “judgement” among actuaries, treatment of “judgement” as speculation under emerging audit practices, and implications on professional actuarial practice. We also presented a series of case studies across all practice areas (general insurance, life insurance, banking), and what these mean for professional actuarial practice in these practice areas.
