Roses are red 🌹 Violets are blue The Greenbelt is waiting What should we do? Join us TONIGHT for a ‘romantic’ debate at The Architect, to discuss whether our greenbelt should be protected, or should be used to alleviate the housing crisis. As our cities expand and the need for housing intensifies, the greenbelt faces scrutiny. Some argue it plays an important role in addressing climate and ecological issues – preserving habitat, preventing urban sprawl, and promoting wellbeing. Others believe it is an arbitrary concept that limits the building of sufficient housing and valuable economic growth. 6 O’Clock Sessions Imagine a place where public, politicians and professionals come together to debate the future of our cities. The 6 O’Clock Sessions are home to informed civic debate – topical discussion with a twist. These sessions are participatory in nature – different opinions are welcome, heard & respectfully challenged. Just the tonic for our polarised times. Everyone welcome. Ticket includes 1 x Gin + mixer or a soft drink Sponsored by 6 O’clock Gin. Tickets: https://lnkd.in/edbwg9bJ

Yesterday, Senator Anderson and Representative Weaver delivered a press conference advocating for funding for the Village of Bishop Hill. This is the same task I will be completing on April 17 at the Illinois Municipal League Lobby Day. Bishop Hill is a small town in Illinois that is designated as a state and national historic site due to its Swedish cultural significance. However, the town is failing. Right now, the state provides them with an annual budget of $40,000, which isn't enough to repave roads, let alone have an administrative office. Many of their historical sites are in disrepair, and the Illinois DNR won't let the residents fix buildings or repair them themselves. This inspired my grandmother and I to develop a survey. We reached out to all the small towns in Illinois with a population of under 250. Based on my conversations with town mayors, they have almost identical experiences. Due to a low population, they: - Cannot afford an administrative office, laptops, or internet connection - Cannot afford to pay their town employees - Cannot afford basic maintenance, like repairing roads, buildings, or cemeteries - Cannot afford to pay a grant writer to obtain additional funding for the aforementioned items - Run their towns based entirely on volunteer efforts This is not sustainable. While most of the towns under 250 people are not tourist destinations, they deserve a fighting chance. For many people, these are towns where they grew up, run a business/farm, or have family members. While they do not need to be prioritized to the extent of larger towns a more significant commercial draw, they need a base level of funding to sustain administrative duties for their residents. I will be advocating for common-sense, practical ways to reallocate existing funding toward providing the basics for small towns in Illinois. Please reach out if you want to know how to use our formula for other towns across the country. https://lnkd.in/gqxWDdZ9

What projects really get the community contributing? After over 20 years in community engagement there are certainly some subjects that get people up and about and having their say. Think controversial ones like dog and cat management, anything to do with bins and of course parking. I even worked one once to do with Shopping Trolley management... you should have seen the comments. What about Hooning? I love seeing Social Pinpoint customers using Social Map, join the 1000 club. Shows that it was right tool for the right project. Plus now that it's integrated with the Form tool you can collect even more data about the participant and the subject matter. #digitalengagement #communityengagement #civictech #drivingsafety
Bayside's 'Say No to Hooning' Initiative Hits the Road with Over 1000 Contributions! 🚘 🎉 Bayside Council (NSW) is dedicated to enhancing safety within its community, particularly on its roads. To achieve this goal, Bayside has launched the 'Say No to Hooning' campaign, aimed at curbing reckless driving behaviors such as hooning, dangerous driving, and public nuisance driving that adversely affect residents, visitors, and businesses alike. Through the implementation of the Social Map tool, Bayside Council encourages residents to mark locations on the map where instances of speeding or hooning have been observed. This information will assist the Council in identifying specific areas and hotspots requiring increased police presence and resources. Thanks to the enthusiastic participation of the community, Bayside has garnered over 1,000 contributions through this initiative. Congratulations to Bayside for its proactive approach to promoting road safety and community well-being! 🎉

Though we can’t control the weather, there are proactive steps we can take to make our homes more resilient. One way homeowners can protect their property from hurricanes and other #HighWind events is by taking advantage of the #FORTIFIED building standards developed by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety - IBHS. #ProtectionIsOurPurpose https://lnkd.in/g7Z6nKFK

Many businesses are leaving SF due to homeless people with mental issues, drug issues, etc. Also reduces SF resident quality life and touristism. Time to get a new mayer which understands that. Having housings which mixes mental people, drug abusers and regular family people who lost their housing, never works. The mental and drug abusers have to be dealt at the state/federal level with facilities far from communities and business centers. They will never live in housing places next to normal people and they will run down the cities and communities with them. The drug abusers have to be clean, to be reintroduced in the major population area with families nearby. Time to rethink, not to throw money at things which does not work for the tax paying population, "The Middle Class"!

well worth a look
We've just completed year one of our five-year 21st Century Community Halls project and boy has it been a busy one! So far 38 of our 80 member halls have been visited for a face-to-face audit with many more lined up for visits in early 2024. Over the next four years, we will also be reaching out to volunteers who run rural halls not in our network to better understand their needs and engage them in this project. So what is a '21st Century Community Hall' - find out by looking at our video with great examples from across the county. Want to find out more? We're running a 21st Century Community Halls Conference on Thursday 25th January 2024. This will provide a fantastic opportunity for village halls and community buildings to network with and share issues/solutions with other trustees and individuals who run halls from across Berkshire. In the afternoon we will be looking at how our community buildings can proactively work towards a low-carbon future. Learn how to calculate both financial and carbon savings by making environmental improvements/changes. Book your place from here: https://lnkd.in/eX_FDezV #communityhalls #berkshire #villagehalls #21stcenturycommunityhalls #communitybuildings #halls #communityassets #lowcarbon #energyefficient #energyefficiency @TheNationalLotteryCommunityFund
