Today marks 2 months at Homerun Presales and what an amazing 2 months it's been so far! Some highlights from the last three months: - I've helped to revamp the way we demo Homerun which has led to increased engagement - I've learned how to engage with prospects through the whole sales cycle, not just the part SEs are typically involved in - I've increased my LinkedIn following by over 30% with the primary demographic being Sales Engineers/Presales folks - I wake up every day energized and excited to help shape the future of Presales - I've gotten to work with highly effective Presales teams and seen what great looks like - I've help to create our customer success stories videos(which are live on youtube, linked below) It's been an amazing journey so far and I wanted to thank Brian Lewis and Kevin Lewis for creating an awesome product and fostering an amazing culture! 𝗗𝗘𝗠𝗢𝗙𝗘𝗦𝗧 Day 2 is just about to start and wow is there a lot of gold. Here are some of my takeaways from day 1: -The role of Sales Engineer/Presales is evolving. We will be included in a much broader scope of the sales motion and be involved earlier in the sales cycle as well as in post sales. One title that was brought up that I found interesting was Customer Experience Architect - We are moving to a world of Solutions, how can we provide the best solution to our prospects/customers' problems - Presales metrics and information are becoming more and more important during the sales cycle (hint hint that's where Homerun Presales can help ;) ) More companies are leveraging Presales knowledge and sentiment to influence the sales cycle and ultimately close more business - The presenters are a wealth of knowledge and I wish I could have Hermoione's Time-Turner to catch all the sessions. A post from Brian Lewis from Homerun Presales that made me smile. Because in some industries, pre-sales has had post-sales responsibilities for years. Is it a good thing? Like many things in life, it is a trade-off. Doing part of the deliveries means your crew gets to work with the technology in realistic settings. That increases their level of expertise, which turns them into better pre-sales advocates. Technical sales can also be cyclical at times. You close a lot of business in December, less in January. So you can use your spare capacity to deliver the EOY rush deals in January. It becomes tricky when these post-sales activities creep up and end up displacing pre-sales. For example, if your crew becomes busy with post-sales support, and that grows faster than revenue. I have seen this before, and this is when I stepped in. A pre-sales group is just not trained to deliver Support at scale. And if you want to keep growing revenue, you cannot allow post-sales responsibilities to override your pre-sales responsibilities. What is Pre- sales? Pre-sales team plays a crucial role in not only acquiring the customer but also ensuring that the customer realizes value quickly from their investment and, ultimately, becomes a successful customer with a high lifetime value. Yet, in today’s customer success driven (albeit dependent!) software industry, the pre-sales organization (sales engineers, solution architects, field engineers, etc.) is perhaps the most underserved group when it comes to headcount, support, and software.
