At HAEDES, we see Nature as part of ourselves, and humans as parts of Nature. To feed this mutual relationship, we value place and the inclusion of the inherent knowledge that resides within stakeholders who are active/live/work in/develop a certain area.
We believe that sustainable solutions for nature restoration can only be developed if all elements, including the relationship with humans, are taken into account and complemented with regenerative developments practices like importance of place, wholeness, potential and nestedness.
We recently started a new project where we will co-create a vision and technical plans for the development of the area of de Rietput Molenmeers, Kalkense Meersen. This is just in our back yard, very close to where we work. Together with Dominiek Decleyre of the Agency of Nature and Forest (Agentschap voor Natuur en Bos) we are starting this journey.
During the next year, we will explore the conditions to restore the foraging/nesting area for Eurasian bittern (Botaurus stellaris) and little bittern (Ixobrychus minutus), two marsh bird species that reside in reed land. We will translate these conditions in technical plans. Because that is what engineers are good at 😉. But like many species, these birds are very specific in their needs and the restoration of land is a huge challenge. A challenge that asks an inclusive, holistic vision of the area.
For that reason, we will facilitate a participatory trajectory, in which local stakeholders will be involved. We will bring visible the importance of place, the local knowledge of the people in the area, and add our technical expertise to develop a carried and solid vision. This will result in technical plans supporting the environmental permit application.
