I recently had the pleasure of attending a UKBAA event at the Digital Catapult in London alongside my colleague, Rob. The focus was on an essential question for any start-up ecosystem: How to grow your angel group? It was an insightful gathering aimed at fueling the growth and efficacy of angel investing communities across the nation. The event wasn't just about networking; it was a dive into innovative strategies and collaborative efforts. Among the many thought-provoking discussions, one highlight for me was the enlightening conversation on supporting founders and entrepreneurs more effectively. Engaging with several group leaders, we exchanged perspectives on critical success factors for early-stage ventures and how angel investors can play a more substantial role in mentoring and supporting the ecosystem. One key takeaway? The importance of not just financial backing but the invaluable provision of mentorship, resources, and networks to catalyse the growth of startups. It’s evident that by fostering stronger, more connected angel groups, we can elevate the entire startup landscape. I'm eager to hear your thoughts: How can angel investors better support startups beyond capital? What strategies have you found effective in growing your ventures? Dive into conversation in the comments or drop me a message if you're curious to learn more about the event’s insights. #UKBAA #AngelInvestors #CentralArcAngels

Angels play a crucial role in driving innovation forward. They are part of the first to believe in and recognize the potential of many deep-tech startups. — I had the opportunity to connect with over 20 Angel Network managers at #ACASummit2024 to uncover their strategies for sustaining and growing Angel activity. Here is what they are focusing on: ✨ Constantly expanding their Angel network. The best way to find new engaged Angels is by sharing a deal. ✨ Designing experiences to retain more members. Some are running regular best practice sessions and offering mentorship to new members. ✨ Trying new deal syndication tools to close rounds faster. The ACA network just launched a brand new syndication tool worth checking out. ✨ Driving diversification by raising small funds. Participation in 10-20 deals is crucial for managing risk in Angel investing. ✨ Breaking down the barrier to Angel investing. Paul M. Russo, PhD is experimenting with novel ways of democratizing the private asset class. — The investor component is only half of the equation. We ecosystem builders have a responsibility to ensure great deal flow and education to the startups we engage with. How can Advisors help the most? ⚡️Help Founders get stronger in sales. Founders cannot overlook the importance of learning how to sell effectively. Selling to the market, to investors, and conveying the vision to their team are all crucial activities for an early-stage company. Dana Allender is an incredible sales coach to know of. ⚡️ Help the Founders map out and validate exit plans. Angels need to understand how a startup plans for a liquidation event. Understanding the metrics required to be acquired by a strategic partner is never too early for a startup. If a team can secure an early check from a potential acquirer, it sends a strong signal to future investors and enhances the likelihood of a buyout down the line. — The energy in Columbus was palpable. Thank you for the many eye-opening and inspiring conversations: Alex Husted Alex Golod Jolene Anderson Jeff Murphy Barry Etra Garth Arevalo Heather Armentrout Scott Jacobs Steven Diedrich Rod Husk Jonathan Hakakian Juan Arango ☀️Raza Shaikh Donna Hazard Alexander Zorychta Jack Sands Vicki Sands Kwame Anku Fuxing "Amber" Sai, CIPP-US Chris S. Lots to take in here at Startupfest! A highlight was today's panel as part of #Impactfest with Hilary Kilgour with Audaxa Ventures, Louis Delorme, CPA, CFA with Amplify Capital and Lyne Landry, ICD.D with AgeTech Collaborative™ from AARP Capital. Key takeaways: - Theory of change needs to be focusing on outcomes - Articulate expectations and education around impact outcome metrics for founders when going into an funding round. This way the whole founding team will be aligned on this important work - Think about cap table diversity just like having team diversity. A range of perspectives is how you will be set up for success - Materiality assessment for a large is not relevant for early stage startups - We need to align on metrics that make sense for the stage of the company - Ensure that even after you get acquired that you continue the impact and fuel that further (rather than have it lost) #startupfest2024 Startup Atlantic Charlotte Murray
