Spire Global awarded Space Services contract by Lacuna Space to build and operate six satellites for a dedicated IoT constellation Spire Global was awarded a Space Services contract by Lacuna Space, a leading satellite IoT connectivity provider. Under the agreement, Spire will initially build and launch six satellites carrying Lacuna Space’s payload and antenna, with the opportunity to scale the constellation to dozens of satellites. Lacuna Space will operate its payloads and receive encrypted data at its Harwell headquarters. With six satellites manufactured by Spire at its facility in Glasgow, UK, in addition to Lacuna Space’s ten earlier satellites, Lacuna Space will be able to scale its IoT network for low-cost, reliable global connections to sensors and mobile equipment. 60 years ago today, the first commercial satellite was launched. Early Bird (or Intelsat 1) marked the inception of satellite communication in the 1960s, represented a huge milestone in global connectivity. Since then, the evolution of satellite technology has given rise to projects like SpaceX's Starlink, which aims to revolutionise internet access worldwide. Unlike Early Bird's single satellite, Starlink's constellation consists of thousands of smaller satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), offering high-speed internet even in the most remote regions. Starlink plays a crucial role in IoT connectivity by providing global coverage, even in remote and underserved areas. With Starlink, IoT devices deployed in various industries such as agriculture, transportation and environmental monitoring, can operate seamlessly across the globe, enabling real-time data collection, analysis and decision-making. Business Case Review ✔ Last week, Patricia and Stefan flew to Oslo to visit Space Norway's headquarters. The purpose of the meeting was to approve the next milestone in our joint MaSSha project. There, we are working on developing maritime IoT services based on the AIS 2.0 (VDES), maritime distress alert detection and exploring network sharing between satellite operators. 🛰 The journey was not just a physical one; it marked yet another step for our collaborative efforts toward advancing maritime communication technology.
