🚀A great day at SAMENA Leaders’ Summit 2024 in Dubai today, sharing insights on the “Evolution of Integration, Intelligence & Sustainability in Infrastructure”. GSOA Director General, Isabelle Mauro was honoured to chair a Roundtable Discussion on the Space & Satellite Ecosystem. Discussions focused on two areas of the space economy: 1. Non-Terrestrial & Terrestrial Networks Integration: Complementarity to deliver connectivity everywhere; Stakeholders’ collaboration & incentives to deploy at global scale; Developments and objective of implementing advanced 5G & the future 6G technology 2. Space Sustainability:  How to maintain sustainable access to and usability of space to catalyze multifarious benefits. EUSPA - EU Agency for the Space Programme stimulates the market development of the #EUspace #downstream sector and supports the uptake of space-based solutions, through its #HorizonEurope calls. EUSPA - EU Agency for the Space Programme’s space #calls are placed under the pillar II of #HorizonEurope, where specifically Cluster 4 of the Work Programme focuses on #Digital, #Industry, and #Space. The first EUSPA Horizon Europe Call with an overall budget of 32.6 million EUR is already in implementation phase with 13 ongoing projects that foster the European #GreenDeal, safeguard our society from crises and underpin Europe’s #digital #sovereignty. The stage is set for a global showdown four years in the making for access to the radio waves needed for communications in space, on Earth, and everywhere in between. A four-week battle over how finite spectrum resources should be divvied up kicks off Nov. 20, when the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) convenes the next World Radiocommunication Conference in Dubai following an intense study period that started right after WRC-19. The quadrennial conference has for decades played host to a fierce battleground for the space industry as it seeks to fend off repeated advances for its spectrum from bandwidth-hungry terrestrial telcos, or International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) in ITU lingo. The statement highlights the contributions that space makes to European competitiveness and societal challenges. ESA’s fleet of dedicated #exoplanet #missions is ever growing. In 2019, #Cheops, the CHaracterising ExOPlanet Satellite was launched. The telescope is on a quest to characterise known exoplanets, refining their radii, masses, bulk compositions, and even atmospheres. Upcoming missions #Plato (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) and #Ariel (Atmospheric Remote-Sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey) are set to join the fleet in 2026 and 2029 respectively. These two missions will aid to the characterisation of known and the discovery of new exoplanets. #Plato will focus on observing Earth-like planets in long orbits around their Sun-like stars. #Ariel is set to study the atmospheres of a huge variety of exoplanets.

[Intersputnik and RASCOM Sign Long-Term Cooperation Agreement for Satellite Communications] The Intersputnik International Organisation of Space Communications and the Regional African Satellite Communications Organisation (RASCOM) have entered into a cooperation agreement covering satellite communications and other areas of shared interest. This agreement includes provisions for mutual consultations, participation in events hosted by both organisations and information and document exchange. The agreement was signed by Mr Timothy Ashong, Director General of RASCOM, and Ksenia Drozdova, Director General of Intersputnik. Intersputnik and RASCOM have affirmed mutual recognition and respect for each other’s status and mandates, establishing a long-term collaborative relationship. Thus, to promote this cooperation, both organisations plan to participate in formal and informal events. These include RASCOM’s Assembly of Parties meetings and Intersputnik’s Board sessions. The agreement stipulates that the organisations will discuss issues affecting their activities. They will share relevant information and documents, except for confidential ones. This exchange aims to coordinate their efforts within the International Telecommunication Union. It also includes the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS). Additionally, the Global Satellite Operators Association (GSOA) and other international and regional bodies are involved. Ksenia Drozdova, Intersputnik’s Director General, added, “Our international efforts include close interactions with global and regional satellite communications organisations. These efforts, involving other entities in the peaceful use of space, are crucial to Intersputnik’s activities.” Therefore, we have always been open to dialogue and information exchange, aiming for equitable, long-term relationships. In addition, the cooperation with RASCOM presents new opportunities to introduce modern infocommunication services in African countries, enhance the quality of life, bridge the digital divide, and achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals.” RASCOM, an intergovernmental organisation established in 1992, comprises 45 member states and aims to extend telecommunications services across Africa, including voice and television. Furthermore, RASCOM prioritises regional African satellite systems, such as the satellite launched by RASCOM in 2010 at 2.9°E, and allows for integrating third-party systems into existing or planned national networks. [Rwanda and UAE Sign MoU on Civil Space Activities] On the sidelines of the ongoing COP28 in Dubai, UAE, the Rwanda Space Agency has signed a memorandum of understanding with the UAE Space Agency to establish collaboration frameworks in civil space activities, fostering research and development, space technologies, geospatial data sharing, and initiating joint space sector projects. Furthermore, the agreement offers opportunities for capacity building in space science and technology. This agreement strengthens bilateral relations between both countries, as they already have active cooperation frameworks in various technical sectors, including education, hospitality, financial services, health, labour, and technology.
