Did you guess the answer to Tuesday's question? It's true: the public's view of education has shifted considerably since before the pandemic, and now Americans believe K-12 schools should focus more on preparing students for careers than for college. It's important to note, though, that colleges are instrumental in preparing students for their careers!

Appreciate this perspective from Lori Batista McEwen. The power of a Portrait of a Learner/Graduate is in the recognition it builds in needing to reinvent the relationships, experiences, and environments of school. The magic is in doing it! This The 74 Media article is a good reminder that not connecting with purpose and finding meaning in school is a barrier; this also means in examining what does bring purpose/joy/engagement, we have a way forward.
Joshua Bay’s latest piece for The 74 Media throws a spotlight on a critical (and longstanding) issue in our schools: student disengagement. 📘 While developing a 'Portrait of a Graduate' isn't a silver bullet, it certainly sets the stage for meaningful change. I was at a recent POG student panel in Fairfax, Virginia, where a student shared how this initiative transformed his school experience, giving it a newfound purpose. 🌟 Remember, it’s not just about creating a Portrait. The real magic happens with the follow-through—think authentic assessments, increased student agency, and a shared vision. These are what ignite a true sense of purpose. What changes have you seen or would like to see in your schools to combat disengagement? Let’s discuss! 👇 https://lnkd.in/gfvAfHxT

Discussion Topic: Unmet Financial Need and Student Success College affordability remains a significant concern nationwide, challenging the perceived value of postsecondary education. As states strive to meet their credential attainment goals, it's crucial to examine how the costs of pursuing a credential impact student retention. This. All this. It's so important to marry our beautiful POG's with relevant goals, engaging and purposeful learning experiences that focus on developing durable skills and signals or assessments that tell us how we and our kids are doing and how we report that to those who need to know. #futureoflearninghastobenow

Perkins V is the primary federal investment in career and technical education. Here are 3 of our favorite ways for schools and districts to use it: 🥇 Enhance curriculum and program development — enabling schools to develop new courses, integrate cutting-edge technology, and update existing materials to meet workforce demands. 🥈 Expand professional development for educators — which not only boosts teacher effectiveness but also enhances the learning experience for students. 🥉 Modernize equipment and facilities — to improve student engagement by offering practical experiences that mirror real-world scenarios. College enrollment is declining across the nation. Our youth increasingly opt out of education beyond high school, many saying they find little to no value in a degree. Young men are at the forefront of this issue, with one million fewer enrollments since 2011, according to a recent Pew Research Center study. Yes, one million. Without a doubt, post-high school credentials are valuable to individuals, communities, and local industries. As we approach the start of a new school year, we need to reverse this alarming trend by supporting aspiring male learners through the college enrollment process. More importantly, we need to eliminate the enrollment barriers that prevent men—especially men of color—from accessing the benefits of higher ed. Let’s close the gap. PBS has more.

At Jobs for the Future (JFF), we see a growing trend among community colleges embracing dual enrollment, with high school students now making up a significant portion of their student bodies. This shift presents an exciting opportunity: What if these colleges reimagined themselves as hybrid institutions that blend high school and college into a seamless experience for students in grades 11-14? This concept aligns with JFF’s “Big Blur” vision, which envisions a future where the lines between high school and college are erased, creating new pathways for young people to succeed in both education and the workforce. In our latest blog, we explore innovative examples from community colleges in Colorado, Massachusetts, and Texas that are leading the way. These schools are rethinking traditional structures, offering early college career pathways, and providing robust support systems that help students earn high school diplomas and associate degrees simultaneously. Read more about these pioneering initiatives and how they’re setting the stage for the future of education >> https://hubs.la/Q02LmjZm0 #TransformWorkandLearning #ReimagineEducation #DualEnrollment #BigBlur #CommunityColleges #WorkforceDevelopment #FutureOfWork
