🗞️ On World Press Freedom Day, let's recognize the vital role of journalists worldwide in upholding democracy and accountability. Despite facing threats, harassment, and restrictive laws, they persist in their pursuit of truth. In Georgia, however, the reality is starkly different. The alarming state of media freedom is a cause for concern, with threats like the proposed foreign agent law, targeting of media donors, and lingering fear of physical violence endangering independent journalism. Despite these challenges, Georgian journalists show remarkable resilience in their commitment to informing the public and holding power to account. Disinformation and repression the media's challenge in a world of global violence When journalists are silenced by violence or censorship, societies lose a fundamental tool for controlling abuses of power. Lack of access to reliable and pluralistic information weakens the democratic fabric, fostering misinformation and allowing corrupt or authoritarian structures to consolidate. Violence against journalists takes on multiple manifestations, each of which progressively erodes press freedom, while feeding a climate of fear that affects all aspects of news reporting. In Latin America, drug trafficking has consolidated its influence not only over political and economic institutions, but also over the media. The situation of journalists and media worldwide has reached a critical point, particularly in the last five years, where violence against these actors has become a systematic phenomenon.
