📄Paper Alert! 📄 I'm thrilled to announce that the first research paper of my PhD on the development of a “3-Electrode Setup for the Operando Detection of Side Reactions in Li-Ion Batteries: The Quantification of Released Lattice Oxygen and Transition Metal Ions from NCA“ has just been published in the Journal of the ECS - The Electrochemical Society! 🕺🧑🔬 🧪 🔬   🔬 You want to detect and #quantify the loss of lattice #oxygen and the #dissolution of transition metal ions from #cathode active materials but don’t have access to complex and expensive devices such as a on-line electrochemical mass spectrometer or a #synchrotron?   🎯 We’ve got you!   Within this study my colleague, and first shared author, Lennart Reuter and me developed an easy-to-adapt 3-electrode #Lithium-Ion #battery cell setup employing an internal sensing electrode (SE).   ✅ Holding the SE at an adequate constant potential enables the detection of reductive currents, similar to the ring currents known from a rotating-ring-disc-electrode (RRDE).   ✅ Through knowledge of the underlying processes and their number of electrons required per reduced species, the reductive currents can be accurately #quantified - as verified by comparison with OEMS experiments! 🎯   ➡️ Read the open access article here:   https://lnkd.in/dhEskuZF 🔍The key highlights of this study comprise:   ·        Investigation of structural stability limit of NCA. ·        Cheap analysis method for precise quantification of evolved O2 and dissolved TMII+. ·        Development of 3-electrode cell with LFP CE, NCA WE, and carbon sense electrode. ·        2.3 e−/ O2 reduction mechanism in carbonate-based electrolyte at sense electrode. The news about the Chirality Medal made me think about this paper that was described the first observation of giant chiroptical activity in nanostructures. What was then an observation of an extremely strong peak in the unusual part of the visible spectrum, later fleshed out in detailed understanding of the role nanoscale size of the nanoparticle assemblies and their high polarizability in the generation of the off-the-chart polarization rotation. It also gives me an opportunity to give a shout-out to my long-term collaborator in this area Prof. Chuanlai Xu for ever-present enthusiasm, open-mindedness, and hard-core dedication to fundamental science. https://lnkd.in/gSsF8RTG

New cover design! Kendall Houk & Frank Glorius 's team most recent work in chemical synthesis is all about bicyclo[1.1.0]butane (BCB). Their article describes a new method for building these complex chemical structures with applications in medicine, materials science and more! Here's a quick summary of the article: ⏣ Use of photocatalyst and light to generate a radical cation from BCB, unlocking new reactivity. ⏣ This [2π+2σ] cycloaddition reaction works with a variety of alkenes, including those previously thought to be difficult. ⏣ Combined experimental results with computational simulations to understand the reaction mechanics, providing a roadmap for future studies. Congratulations to Dr. Simuck Yuk and LT Walter Cesarski (Chemical Engineering, ’24) on their recent publication in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces! The USMA CLS computational team, led by Dr. Yuk, collaborated with the Cornell experimental team, led by Prof. Joo, to investigate the applicability of modality-tunable N-doped graphene as an electrolyte additive as a solution toward the goal of achieving high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries. Dr. Yuk's team confirmed the strong adsorption affinity of lithium polysulfides (LiPS) to pyridinic nitrogen-doped sites and improved Li+ mobility on the graphene backbone observed experimentally. Abstract: A gap in the market exists between super strong neodymium magnets and less sensitive ferrite magnets. This gap means that compromises are made in engineering items like car sensors or wind turbine rotors. The Critical Materials Institute is working on a cerium-based magnet that will hit the sweet spot between powerful rare earth magnets and the much weaker ferrites. The magnet is process effective and less susceptible to supply chain disruptions. Its unique intra-granular coercivity mechanism does not require complicated microstructure developments and opens potential for advanced manufacturing.
