Last week I had the pleasure and honor of meeting with FDIC Vice Chairman Travis Hill in his office in Washington. I had an excellent discussion with the Vice Chairman about the need for more community banks. This is a concern I have had the last few years as M&A has intensified, and Denovo bank activity has weakened to an all-time low. Why is this issue important you may ask? The role of community banks in our entrepreneurial society is critical. Even though community banks only hold 20 percent of the bank market share, they lend 50 percent of the small business loans in our nation. Why is that important? Because 60 percent of Americans work in a small business. The small business sector is vital to the American economy. If we do not have community banks in our country, who will fund all these small business loans? I shared an idea with the Vice Chairman that has a high likelihood of increasing the number of community banks in our nation.
