Why is the 'go to' fix for road safety always a reduction in speed? Why don't we STOP allowing unqualified people to train minors, and improve driver competency levels? 80kms on a multi-lane freeway is ridiculous. Germany are consistently in the Top 10 Globally for road safety - they have an Autobahn (no speed restriction), possibly one of the most rigorous and most expensive licensing processes in the world, and a fatality rate of 4.1/100,000. Australia's fatality rate is 4.6/100,000 (or 9/100,000 in the 18-20yo age group) and is rated approximately 15th for road safety. https://lnkd.in/gtCc-uRQ

The long and winding road to congestion pricing in New York: yesterday the MTA Board gave its stamp of approval to the plan and the tolling fees. MTA Chair Janno Lieber has said tolls could be started as soon as May or June, but the state of New Jersey and the United Federation of Teachers, along with other plaintiffs, have sued to stop the tolling program in its tracks. Find out more in my coverage of the Board meeting for Smart Cities Dive. #congestionpricing #nyc #publictransit

“…the Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act, which has been introduced in the House and Senate several times over the past four years, would set up a competitive grant program dedicated solely for truck parking. Any public entity with jurisdiction over truck parking would be eligible for the funds, as would public-private partnerships.” How many jurisdictions would apply if the funds were made available? The parking problem may be much more systemic than just a lack of funding or conflicts with higher priorities. You can help by raising awareness with your members of congress. Washington Trucking Association is working on legislation to help elevate the essentiality and the need for truck parking in communities dependent on freight for economic benefit and the public good.
Local opposition and divided attention in Washington are hurdles that must be cleared before the trucking industry can get parking legislation passed. #trucking #legislation #government https://lnkd.in/gytxYc-H

Thomas "Alec" More, AICP and the SRF Consulting Group team are working with the Lower Savannah Council of Governments to create a more useable and safe public transportation system! Check out the local coverage. Alec says, “We’ve really learned that there is a market for public transportation services in Aiken County. But we’ve also certainly learned that there are opportunities that we can improve the performance of the service, the efficiency of the service, and just make it a more useful service overall to Aiken and North Augusta." https://lnkd.in/g2fXGBcx

#WANTED: #BASIC #HUMAN #COURTESY Drivers do not expect royal treatment at the factory gates (materials gate) but a gentle and humane approach. A smile and a greeting such as ‘Kaise ho?’ as the drivers lean over the window to gain entry into the manufacturing facility premises would be cherished. Not too much to ask for. Basic human courtesy. This simple act of respect can go a long way in improving their experience. The need for better facilities and treatment is not just a desire, it’s a necessity for these hardworking individuals. Otherwise, all the talk of transporter and drivers are part of value chain by end users is sheer bunkum. Hypocrisy. With a Buddha-like stoicism, drivers gulp such insult(?) or “talk to my hand” interaction. “Yeh jaante nahi hai hum us se do gunaa, teen guna kama te hai. Phir be, dekhi ye unka nazariya!” I heard such comments in pain-soaked voices. Only a heartless person could approve of such treatment. The next interaction will be the logistics clerk (sorry, executive. These days, there are no clerks. All executives!). How soon that will transpire is anyone’s guess. You’re not the only truck and driver who entered the premises for loading or unloading. Wait. Last week, the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization's research was featured in a Boston Globe article exploring New York City’s new congestion pricing program and transportation policy conversations happening in the Boston area. The article cited the MPO’s report “Learning From Roadway Pricing Experiences,” which examined roadway pricing strategies across the U.S. and interviewed staff involved with implementing those strategies. The MPO’s staff continues to study the potential of roadway pricing policies to ease traffic congestion and generate revenue for transportation system investments. Today RACV released the results of the My Country Road survey, with more than 7,000 Victorians telling us that potholes and poor road conditions are the number one safety issue on our regional roads. The Melba Highway received the most responses regarding safety concerns, followed by Tylden-Woodend Road from Woodend to Tylden, Kilmore Road from Monegeetta to Gisborne, and the Goulburn Valley Highway from Nagambie to Shepparton. The most dangerous intersection in regional Victoria was identified as the junction of the Midland Highway and Howard Street in Epsom, north of Bendigo. RACV will use the data from the survey to encourage the state government and local councils to make commitments that deliver safer regional roads. RACV’s Head of Policy, James Williams, said the results indicated that the condition of regional roads has become a major safety concern for Victorians. “Over 7,000 Victorians have provided us with data about safety on our regional roads, with potholes or poor road condition being the number one safety issue. While in 2021, dangerous driver behaviour was the biggest safety concern on regional roads, this year poor road conditions received more than double the number of responses.” My Country Road full results are available at racv.com.au/haveyoursay https://lnkd.in/gFCgprxT

While we plan new bridges and talk about public transportation, it's worth looking into how public transportation systems are faring across the nation. We need to rethink our transportation systems by prioritizing safety. https://bit.ly/3VYS2ek

How can we nudge slower speeds? Transport for NSW is asking people to have their say on Road Safety: https://lnkd.in/gTE6Y3pj Please fill in the survey with your views. WalkSydney advocates for reducing speed limits, better road rules and infrastructure for walking. Reducing speed limits is a key ask because not only does it make roads safer for people walking, especially children, reducing the risk of fatality or serious injury by a whopping 80% (compared to 50km/h), but because it also makes the street friendlier and more conducive to walk. While we would love to see the default speed limit reduced, or at least the current high activity/school/local area categories dropped to 30km/h, another approach that CfRS could take in their behaviour campaigns is to recommend slower speeds. Currently drivers anchor to the only message we provide on the road - the maximum limit. Providing a different anchor, an advisory speed limit, could start to nudge people to drive slower. Drivers can even be rewarded for driving at the lower speed, getting a 'green wave' of green lights if they travel at that lower speed - this is what is done on tidal roads in many cities, like San Fransisco. The new Speed Zoning Guidance does not allow this kind of nudge, except for trams (who get a blue 20km/h advisory sign). Let's ask CfRS to roll out the blue carpet of slow advisory speeds more widely...
