🔵 Join Our Team: Making a Difference in Environmental Health at the City of Coppell Over 15 years ago, I walked into the city of Coppell's Environmental Health office as a young man looking for a job that would fulfill three objectives: human interaction, decision-making, and innovation. Let me explain. I wanted these things for these reasons:  1️⃣ Human interaction: I was searching for a job that would enable me to interact with people and build relationships with them.  2️⃣ Decision-making:  I was looking for a job where my supervisors trusted me to make decisions. 3️⃣ Innovation: Finally, I was seeking a job that would encourage me to experiment and innovate. ✅ The city of Coppell provided me with precisely what I was looking for and more. They offered me an opportunity to serve our residents and establish relationships with them, make important decisions that improved the lives of residents and business owners, and learn through trial and error. The organization invested in my development, providing opportunities to improve my skills and serve the organization in numerous roles. Today, I am the Assistant Director of the Community Development department, and we are seeking an Environmental Health Specialist (Health Inspector) to fill the same position I started with. 🔧 Environmental Compliance Supervisor 🌍 As someone who supervises and conducts operation and maintenance activities for closed landfills, I can attest that this responsibility is both challenging and rewarding. Our primary aim is to ensure these sites are environmentally safe and compliant with all regulatory standards. Given the importance of maintaining closed landfills, the role requires a meticulous attention to detail and a deep understanding of environmental protocols. Travel forms a significant part of this job—up to 75% of my time is spent on the road, visiting different sites across various states. While this might sound daunting, it offers a unique opportunity to see diverse landscapes and work with a variety of local teams. The key is to stay flexible and organized, ensuring that every site receives the thorough care and inspection it deserves. Being on the move so often means each day is different. One day, you could be conducting ground water sampling, and the next, supervising the repair of a gas collection system. The experience and insights gained from this traveling role are invaluable. GDOT is hiring a historian! As most of you know, this was my first job out of grad school with my MHP, as my career switch officially kicked off. I absolutely loved this job -- there's a reason I still do 99.9% GDOT work as a consultant. The historic preservation community in Georgia, and specifically the community around GDOT, is unmatched. A direct hire position at GDOT is literally the best opportunity a new MHP grad could ask for. I don't think I could have learned so much, from so many smart people, in so little time any other way. These jobs don't come up often, because people like working at GDOT and tend to stay!! So, if you're in the market... apply! And ask me any questions! (A note on timing: it was about this time of year ten years ago that I was applying to the job at GDOT... and I started working there in September. In that time, I had a baby and 7 weeks of "maternity leave" [in snark quotes because the U.S. doesn't actually have maternity leave - so I had 7 weeks of not working at my part-time job and not getting paid] and they never even knew I was pregnant. 🙃 So, just know that it's a long process getting hired by state government, and don't get discouraged!) https://lnkd.in/eYhDMAqQ
