So...I'm not waiting for another sideswipe or crushed pelvis to investigate, because by then it's too late, and you aren't coming home to your son or daughter.
There are seven (7) quarts of blood in the human body, and I have no choice but to just keep chirping from this branch on which I sit, hoping the industry will take it to heart before the next amputation...
...and industry leadership is either gonna get on board and share this message & post...and re-post....and train you, not just run you through class, and care about your condition, and change the culture...
...or they won't. It's just that simple.
And no matter what....TODAY and always....YOU look out for YOU...and for your partner. I don't care if you like each other. Have each others' back.
You're riding along...on the shove. The new guy is riding the opposite side...like you told him to...nice and comfy. He's done everything you've asked and more...maybe even likes the same football team you do, and you're just getting to know each other.
Have you considered any CLOSE CLEARANCES ahead?
You've been here a hundred times...but he hasn't.
Working on getting someone qualified is one of the hardest things you do as a railroader, trying not to let the new puppy pee on the rug. Not only are you thinking safety and operations for yourself, but you have to think for them as well...and there's always someone watching the both of you.
Sometimes, it's another crew looking out for you that looks and knows something ain't quite right, and they speak up.
Might be a hump, or a plant & loading dock, or maybe even a yard track you haven't shoved into for a while...
Take the extra steps and time to make yourself - and them - aware of CLOSE CLEARANCES.
Shoving, shoving, shoving, SHOVING, SHOVING....
Come home today.
