Allegheny County Economic Development is proud to be a part of the 500 in 500 Program, a bold initiative aimed at identifying and providing 500 units of affordable and accessible housing within the next 500 days. Our mission is to move individuals and families out of shelters and into stable, safe housing.
Why This Matters:
In many markets, high housing costs and low vacancy rates make solving homelessness a daunting challenge. However, Allegheny County is uniquely positioned to tackle this issue head-on. By leveraging our available resources and working together, we can make a significant impact on housing stability in our community.
How We Will Achieve This:
The 500 in 500 Program will bring together a diverse array of partners, all dedicated to the urgent goal of increasing affordable housing options. We will focus on:
· Repurposing Existing Buildings: Utilizing structures such as nursing homes, hotels, and former convents to create new housing units.
· Committed Partners: Action Housing Inc., Brandywine Communities, and Rising Tide Partners have already pledged over 75 units towards this initiative.
· Funding: ACED has allocated $5.9 million in HOME-ARP funds from the American Rescue Plan Act to increase housing stability. These funds are earmarked for projects currently in development, with additional resources potentially available.
A Call to Action:
We believe that by aligning our efforts and investments around this common goal, we can achieve remarkable progress on an accelerated timeline. This initiative not only aims to provide immediate housing solutions but also fosters new ways of thinking and working together to address homelessness.
Join Us:
We invite all stakeholders, community members, and organizations to join us in this transformative journey. By working together, we can make affordable housing a reality for those in need.
