The 2027 ICMA - International City/County Management Association Class Orientation was a whirlwind of information. There are some big issues on the immediate horizon that the Executive Board will be focused on that will impact our membership: ➡ The hiring of a new Executive Director ➡ Initiating Phase 1 of the Governance Task Force recommendations regarding regional apportionment (There are plenty of other issues that are important and will receive the Board’s attention. These two are top of mind.) Since being selected as the 2024-2025 President-Elect and going through our orientation, I reflected on my own beliefs about ICMA and used the Six Questions (modified to the Association) we use in the City of Coppell every day in our service to the community to guide my thoughts. I believe answering these questions provides further clarity on my reason for wanting to serve ICMA’s membership. 1️⃣ Why does the Association exist? To create and support thriving communities throughout the world. (From ICMA’s Vision Statement) 2️⃣ How do we as City and County managers/leaders in our organizations behave? Dedicated to the faithful stewardship of the public trust and shared ideals of management excellence. (From ICMA’s Declaration of Ideals) 3️⃣ What does the Association do? Provide member support through publications, data and information, peer and results oriented assistance, and training and professional development. (From ICMA: Leaders at the Core of Better Communities) 4️⃣ How will our members succeed? Working collaboratively, valuing everyone, and being accountable to each other. We will be ethical, transparent, disciplined, and mission driven. 5️⃣ What is important, right now? Hiring of the new ICMA Executive Director. 6️⃣ Who must do what? The Board taking the time to listen to the membership, focusing on member needs, and incorporating these expectations in the hiring of the new Executive Director. I look forward to continuing to share my journey with you as I serve as President-Elect, President, and Past President, beginning in Pittsburg starting next Friday.
