I love a good underdog story as much as the next person (*cue Rocky theme music*). As I'm watching the NFL playoffs, I can't help but wonder if there is a difference in the mentality of the defending champs verse someone who is an underdog. Hear me out. As much as the underdog seems thrilled to exceed everyone's expectations, I can't help but notice that the defending champs have a certain confidence under pressure that carries them through the peaks and valleys with poise. They've been there before. And don't confuse confidence with cockiness; they are two distinctly different things. You can surely be both confident and humble. In reality, Cockiness is typically a trait seen more so in someone who is trying to prove themselves rather than someone who is confident. Ok, so what does this mean for my team? Do I treat my team members like defending champs, or like underdogs? Do I have low expectations and ask them to prove to me day in and day out that they are worth keeping around, or do I convey to them that I trust them and have the freedom to get it done without me micromanaging because they are already champs (that's why I hired them, after all)? Good things to ponder while I watch football. Go Bears.

Ever noticed the trend on LinkedIn? "Hiring rock stars, A players, join the rocket ship." Everyone dreams of having an all-star team. All-Star teams aren’t born; they are made. Sure, we want to hire folks who can sell and gain access, but finding a rock star? It's just the beginning. Everyone needs a coach – think of athletes without coaches. You won't find many. Building a team isn't just about rock stars. It's about working together, leveraging everyone's strengths, and improving every day. It means rolling up your sleeves, sitting in on appointments, practicing gaining access, providing guidance, and feedback. Leadership is not just about reporting forecasts and holding team meetings. It's about pushing everyone to get better at what they do every day and making them better. Every team member is valuable, and as leaders, it's our job to help them succeed.

The Godfather of Las Vegas - Executive Recruiting for Casinos/Gaming and High Tech (By Referral Only Please)
Gaming/Casino Industry Hiring Report - Regardless of the spin and press releases, most companies are experiencing revenue declines. Casino companies and gaming suppliers are laying off. How do I know? I get the resumes of those in the RIF. Additionally, a surprising number of “C” and VP level executives have “retired”, “on sabbatical” or “spending time with family”. Let's be clear: Gaming companies are laying off high level executives.

A-Players are decisive but that doesn’t mean they always make the right decision 😅 Although, their success rate is higher than most when it comes to making high impact decisions. When they do make the wrong decision, they own it, and then take corrective action. It’s hard to course correct when you’re not moving. Indecision can be more costly than making the wrong decision. A players are decisive and own the outcome either way and decisively pivot if necessary. Agree? What am I missing? In Proverbs 18:15 it is written, “The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge; the ears of the wise seek it out.” As a leader, it is your job to discover and learn all you can about the candidate prior to offering the position. The more you know, the greater the likelihood of success for both of you. The less you know, the greater the likelihood of failure and a mis-hire. Work hard to discover all you can in advance. After the hire it is too late. https://a.co/d/a9NsxxK
