Did you read the article in Cartoon Brew about how Lionsgate signed a deal with the AI company, Runway (article in comments below). What happened to the ART of storytelling? According to Lionsgate studio vice chairman Michael Burns, the goal is to save money – “millions and millions of dollars” – by having filmmakers and creators use its AI model to replace artists in production tasks such as storyboarding. I’m a huge history buff and after thinking about it, I instantly made a connection to the film industry in the 1980s. Before the 80s, former veteran filmmakers would be promoted to become the head of a studio. That to me is how we got amazing films like Taxi Driver and Apocalypse Now. Then in the 1980s, business people (instead of filmmakers) would be hired as the head of the studio, and that’s when it started to change. When money and profits became way more important than the art of film and storytelling. Don’t get me wrong, it’s always been about money, but the former filmmakers understood how to make art that would also bring money. I’ve always felt that was the beginning of the downfall of the art side of filmmaking. There have been great films that have come during this time, but I feel that’s when the industry started having all the problems we now have today: “Just throw the hot new actor in and it’ll bring in money” “Do re-shoots after re-shoots because they don’t have a definitive plan. Oh, and by the way, “we needed that yesterday” “Content. Content. Content” If you have that 1980s feel in 2024, then you understand why we’ve created CELs. The only question I have in mind: What went wrong in the renaming process? 🤔 In the article, SRT’s artistic director mentioned that the company had been conducting stakeholder engagements to better understand their position on the new name. However, shouldn't stakeholder engagement sessions be conducted during the actual renaming exercise instead of after the launch? If these sessions were indeed conducted during the process, how did such major discontent get overlooked? Identifying the right stakeholder groups and testing materials with them before launching any brand or rebrand is crucial to ensure that your decisions are grounded in data. This prevents any decision from being solely internally driven. Decisions made that way are more often than not disconnected with consensus on the ground such as this. Effective stakeholder engagement helps mitigate risks, aligns the brand with audience expectations, and fosters a sense of ownership and support among key groups. This 2001 drama film starring Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor is also often quoted for its innovative take at integrating commercial products within the storyline. One particular example where it is used is that of Coca-Cola, not only existing but also featured within the movie a number of times. One classic sequence is when the characters spend time in each other's company laughing and bonding at parties over bottles of Coca-Cola-eminently a weakly integrated adjunct to the picture's emotional core, but it's also the tipping point to brand placement in movies. So, the Coca-Cola in "Yaadein" was one of those very instances where the product placement of Bollywood started to reflect the emotional undertones of the movie and might even have had some influence over how audiences watched the film and the brands. Such placements were not accidentals; they were artistically and creatively done to epitomize the emotional journey the audience goes through the film. This, of course, was only the beginning, and this sets a precedent for more sophisticated and integrated product placements into later films. From "Yaadein," we can observe the subtle rise of a practice that will soon become a major element of the industry: one in which products serve to double up to fulfill two kinds of utterly separate roles in the experience of cinema: the narrative element, as well as the advertisement. #nitinabindo
