School Principal by Profession💜Teacher by Heart🤗 Activist by Conviction✊🏿 & Pan-Afrikanist by Nature👊🏿I just wanna see black communities rise & change the narrative🥹 Xhosa country boy from the Eastern Cape ✨
I want to address a topic that I have observed quite strongly recently: "quiet quitting." This happens when a teacher has mentally checked out but is still showing up at school 🏫 while they wait for their next move. It might seem harmless, but it can actually impact the school environment in a big way. Here’s how: 1. Negative attitude: 😒 When a teacher is disengaged, it can spread through the other staff members like wildfire, affecting everyone’s mood and energy. 2. Productivity Dip: 📉 A checked-out teacher isn’t bringing their A-game to the classroom, which can affect the students’ learning experience. 3. Teamwork Troubles: 🤝 A disengaged teacher avoids collaboration, making it harder for the team to work on projects and initiatives. 4. Culture Crash: 💔 A disengaged teacher can really disrupt a positive, supportive culture that has been built by the school. The right thing to do is to speak to your employer and not let your negative energy affect everyone in the community, especially the children✨. #SchoolCommunity #TeacherEngagement #PositiveVibes #TeamSpirit #ProfessionalGrowth💪 #HappySchool

These types of programs should be universal and many are surprised to learn they are not. For far too many students with disabilities, the floor drops out from under them at 21 when they age out of special education services into a fragmented, underfunded and inadequate adult services landscape where the onus is on the families and caregivers to fight for funding and services. Most of them will face wait lists that are decades long. Transition planning is critical as is the need for more postsecondary and training options targeted for students with autism and other developmental disabilities. We can't fix the massive underemployment of people with disabilities without addressing this gap. #highereducation #specialeducation #disabilitiesinclusion

Building strong teacher-student relationships has been proven to have numerous positive impacts on students' academic engagement, attendance, grades, behavior, and dropout rates in both the short- and long-term. These effects remain significant even when accounting for variations in individual, family, and school backgrounds. It's not just students who benefit from these relationships; teachers also experience greater joy and reduced anxiety in the classroom. Research indicates that empathy plays a crucial role in fostering these connections. Teachers who practice perspective-taking, actively considering how students might perceive situations, can overcome biases and strengthen their relationships with students. Overall, cultivating empathy and understanding in teacher-student interactions is key to creating a positive and supportive learning environment for everyone involved. I hope you're enjoying your half term! Wishing you a fantastic time off and a refreshed start when you get back to work! 😊🌞 Grade A Recruitment 📩giedre@gradearecruitment.co.uk

As an Accommodation Coordinator, I strongly believe that students who learn to advocate for their academic accommodations in college is a crucial skill that empowers them. Here are 4 reasons why advocacy is important for students ✨ 🏫 1. Self-Advocacy Skills: Developing self-advocacy skills empowers students with disabilities to take control of their educational journey. It allows them to assert their needs, preferences, and rights, fostering a sense of independence and self-determination. 2. Ensuring Access to Resources: Students who advocate for their academic accommodations ensure that they have access to the resources and support they need to succeed in their studies. By actively seeking out accommodations, students can address barriers to learning and level the playing field in the academic environment. 3. Promoting Equal Opportunity: Advocating for academic accommodations promotes equal opportunity for students with disabilities. By advocating for their needs, students contribute to creating a more inclusive educational environment where all individuals have the opportunity to learn and excel. 4. Building Confidence: Successfully advocating for academic accommodations can boost students' confidence and self-esteem. By advocating for themselves, students develop a sense of empowerment and resilience, knowing that they have the ability to navigate challenges and access the support they need.

I hope everyone has had a great week 2 of the school year. We have been busy this week commencing coaching meetings and lesson observations with the more than 120 teachers in our Early Carer program. It’s interesting the wide variety of things we have discussed with our teachers. From narrative writing structure and bump it up walls to creating visual zones of regulation charts so students can identify how they’re feeling, to creating EALD resources using fun icons to help these students with communication. We have had some teachers overwhelmed to the point of tears where our 24/7 support was accessed through a phone call reassuring them they didn’t need to know EVERYTHING right now. We’ve helped teachers create routines and expectations using flow charts, diagrams and memes, shared get to know you resources and worked through bulletproof entry routines. As you can see, we work with teachers on what is important for them. The discussions I’ve had with the YXL team and the teachers I have been working with this week have had me reflecting on the term “Sink or Swim” Have you heard someone say, I didn’t have any support when I started, it was sink or swim, so I learnt to swim. Although this may be partially true, we can’t have teachers sinking. We can’t even have teachers learning to SWIM ALL on their own. Every teacher deserves a coach, someone to help them improve. Early Career Teachers are no different. Starting teaching is unlike nearly any other career, where on the very first day, you are expected to complete almost all the same tasks as a teacher with years of experience. This would be like an apprentice builder having to construct a house all on his own on his very first day. The cognitive load teachers are under at the beginning of the year is immense, especially if you are a teacher in a new school. That’s why we find our work so rewarding, throwing out a life rope to teachers who are drowning, teachers who are treading water and teachers who are swimming. Each one of them deserves the support to thrive in this wonderful occupation and reap the rewards it so often has. Support leads to growth and growth leads to better outcomes for the students in our schools.
