Our summary & analysis of tax measures in Budget 2024 is up. Short Analysis For most, the biggest update from this federal budget will be the newly-increased capital gains rate. Tax practitioners will be busy attempting to recognize taxable capital gains by no later than June 25, 2024, and most discussions will focus on this issue. However, the tax administration measures in this budget should not escape notice, not least because of how little they were telegraphed prior to the Budget’s release. New legislation continues to increase the CRA’s powers with no restriction on cost to the taxpayer or (in most cases) minimum tax payable. It is difficult to reconcile some of the new measures (which would require taxpayers to provide answers under oath or affirmation, on pain of summary conviction) with individuals’ constitutional protections. Additional review and exposition of these rules – whether through litigation or consultation – seems inevitable. View the rest online at https://lnkd.in/gy6hgmAy, or see attached.
