Building Ballpoint: the growth agency I always wanted to hire // Ex-startup founder of Wine List, first hire at Thriva // Newsletter writer // Loves incrementality, good copy, and social-first creative
Attention all early stage and tiny teams. Today is the one-year anniversary of Nell, our first grad, joining our team and here are my lessons learnt along the way. First, back story. My first ever job was at Hotwire, where every year they took on 6 or 7 new grads. I was grad year-adjacent because I wasn't a PR, but an in-house marketer. But I saw the inner workings of and thought it was an incredible training ground. Ever since, I've really loved the culture of training people up. At Thriva, I got the first opportunity to put all that into practice as a manager with zero experience and a very patient first team (shouts to Aisling, Ria, Cesare, Joshua, Anoushka, and Mike). But it's one thing hiring junior team members when you've got the benefit of VC money, breathing room, and a much broader team for help. And another, as a bootstrapped agency where a single client churning can have a serious impact to cash flow and survival. Running a grad programme was a very deliberate choice but one that carried risks. A year in, it's been one of the best decisions I've made. Here's the takeaways: → Training a grad has taken approximately 6-8 hours of my time each week → The rate of learning is compounding. Her knowledge at the end of month 1 was 5x that of week 1, and month 6 was 5x that of month 1. That rate hasn't slowed down. → We don't have the interview process right yet. The areas where Nell excels aren't where I think either she or we thought she would during interview → It creates future hiring needs – I don't want someone on a huge upward trajectory to be doing entry-level stuff when they're exceeding it → It's made me understand Facebook Ads at least 20% better than I did a year ago In short, it takes a huge amount of time, and it's deeply challenging. But the payoff is brilliant. Have you been weighing up hiring a grad recently?

Never too late! 😅 Here is cheers to all the work my team has done so far and for the work they will be doing and acing it! 😎 LI family, let me introduce you to a perfect example of an HR team! Here are a couple of things I learnt from them. 1. Sukanya Roy Chowdhury: How to be patient even when things don't go accordingly. Empathy is her biggest quality. Oswald of the recruitment team. 🌊 2. Arnab Kumar Das: Has speed + accuracy of a Flash. Spontaneous by nature. Narad Muni of the team.⚡ 3. Atharv Ojha: Always take out time for some physical activity despite heavy workload and how to maintain work life balance. Virat of the team. 🚴♂️ 4. Aditya Srivastav: Decorum, discipline and professionalism like someone from the military. Aye captain! 👮♂️ 5. Suha Draboo: Learning capabilities of the highest order, aces it despite being new to things and diligent. Blossom of the group. 🏃♀️ 6. Yashna B.: Never backs up from any task. Finishes it like a pro. The HR everyone needs. A true Hufflepuff by heart. 🌸 7. Pragati Awasthi: The intern who works like a full time employee, highest credibility and accountability. Hermoine Granger because she is curious. 👩💻 8. Rajvansh Gupta: Already working on things that you don't even know you might need later. Creative by nature and adaptive like Bear Grills from Man Vs Wild. 9. Sachleen Kaur: Fierce and a perfectionist. Errors is not in her dictionary. Arya Stark. 🤽♀️ 10. Tanya Singh: How to enjoy work and not stress over small things. Bubbles, cute but not to mess with. 🤓 I wish I could write more and more about how awesome these bunch of folks are but here I take a pause. 3 years with Scaler wouldn't have been possible without you all. 🙂 Hereafter, vouching for all the passionate folks from my Talent Acquisition team. Don't know if I was a fun manager then, but it was surely fun working with you all. May you all shine bright and reach the zenith of success. :) To Epiphany! 🥂 #scaleracademy #gratitude #hrcommunity #teameffort #linkdinpost

Sometimes the best opportunities are the ones you weren't expecting. When I joined Assistantly, I was scared of what was next for me. I had loved my time working in tech and the thought of leaving that behind for a new role and new industry was scary. I hopped on a call with Laith Masarweh after week one and he was asking how was feeling and if I was 100% bought in and committed. I was honest with him. I said I would be lying if I said yes - I needed more time and exposure the the industry and what my new role will look like to make that decision. Coming up on 6 weeks and I can confidently say that I am 100% bought in. The people. The passion. The growth. My team!!! 😍 Honestly, it was a dream come true to have an opportunity like this present itself. It is just the beginning. 🧡 Here is your reminder - If there is something you have been wanting to do but are scared to, just do it. You got this. #CareerGrowth #NewOpportunities #EmbraceChange #SalesLeadership #Teamwork #PassionAtWork #TechIndustry #CareerJourney #Leadership #GrowthMindset #DreamJob #MotivationMonday #Inspiration #Assistantly #Hiring #JoinUs #SuccessStory #WorkPassion #TeamSuccess #NewBeginnings

The cool thing about roles is that only YOU can fulfill your exact role. In a lot of cases ,the longer an associate is here, the more customized their role becomes. If they were to leave, we’d have a hard time finding someone to do exactly what they do! So why is this a good idea? Why do we think this is the best way to operate?
