Did you know? The Definition of Rotary How would a person describe "Rotary"? There are so many characteristics of a Rotary club as well as the activities of a million Rotarians. There are the features of service, internationality, fellowship, classifications of each vocation, development of goodwill and world understanding, the emphasis of high ethical standards, concern for other people an many more descriptive qualities. In 1976 the Rotary International Board of Directors was interested creating a concise definition of the fundamental aspects of Rotary. The turned to the three men who were then serving on Rotary's Public Relation Committee and requested that a one-sentence definition of Rotary be pre pared. After numerous drafts, the committee presented this definition, which has been used ever since in various Rotary publications: "Rotary is an organization of business and professional person united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build goodwill and peace in the world.” Those 31 words are worth remembering when someone asks, "What is a Rotary club?"

"The massive arrival of sargassum on the coasts of the Mexican Caribbean has generated an environmental and socioeconomic crisis. The excess of this seaweed has represented a loss of 11.6% of Quintana Roo’s PIB – around 41 billion Mexican pesos (~2 mld Euro). The Kingdom of the Netherlands has a long tradition in coastal management and marine engineering. With countries in the Kingdom that are being affected by sargassum, such as Curaçao and Sint Maarten, we have developed a strong knowledge foundation. This in combination with impressive innovations for collecting plastics in open water, Mexican stakeholders consider Dutch companies and organizations key players in turning sargassum into an opportunity." via LNV Attaché Netwerk

I like to raise your attention to check out the paragraph posted by Prof Nelson Lam (at University of Melbourne) acknowledging the work of the Australian Earthquake Engineering Society. Nelson's insights resonate with the idea that there is plenty of scope for the two countries (Malaysia and Australia) learning from each other, and sharing knowledge embodied in design guides and CPD courseware. Although the two countries go by different sets of regulations, provisions stipulated by the respective standards should be closely aligned. Feel free to check out and visit our joint-work at www.quakeadvice.org, offering free learning materials and design tools in seismic engineering. #UniMelb #SunwayUni #SET #IEM #SeismicEngineering
It is with great pleasure to receive the Charles Bubb award which was handed out to me by Dr Scott Menegon, president of the Australian Earthquake Engineering Society (AEES) during this year’s annual technical conference held in Adelaide. This is the highest award for earthquake engineering excellence in Australia, which is presented by AEES once every 2-3 years. The society was co-founded by Charles Bubb and Kevin McCue in 1990, and the size of the membership has grown to 200. The society aims to advance the science and practice of earthquake engineering and engineering seismology, and to advocate measures to reduce harm caused by earthquakes. The writing and updating of the Australian Standards for Seismic Actions (and the commentary for free open access via AEES.org.au) led by Prof John Wilson over the years, is an example contribution of the AEES. A task force comprising volunteers from AEES, led by Dr Scott Menegon, is currently developing the AEES design guide for seismic retrofitting and strengthening of existing structures. Continuous professional development programs are delivered by AEES members on a regular basis. The most recent program is the 10-hour webinar series on earthquake design which was hosted by Dr Menegon, and was attended by some 200 practising professional engineers. An international seismic design support service is also offered for free via website: quakeadvice.org which is cohosted by Dr Daniel Looi (Sunway University Malaysia) and myself. It is hoped that more engineers and the allied professionals make good use of these facilities many of which are offered for free.

“Sometimes you need to press pause to let everything sink in.” What do the words of an F1 race champion, Sebastien Vettel have to do with Native Title? Every so often, whatever you do, it’s important to look at what has been achieved, reflect on it and use it for energy to keep going. Some stats are now in on the Central Desert Group’s work for our Annual Reporting. The Central Desert Representative Area covers 822,887 km2. You can see a map on our website https://bit.ly/46Hy7E2 As of June 30, 2024 – Native Title had been determined over more than 94% of the Central Desert Rep area. 76% of the Rep Area is Exclusive Possession Native Title. 18% of the Rep Area is Non-exclusive Native Title. Behind each of these stats will be hundreds and thousands of human voices and stories, histories, and futures waiting to unfold. Let it sink in. Now that we have paused, let’s get on with the remaining 6% of the rep area – the remaining chapters of histories to be recognised. What follows are human voices writing the futures to come. #desert #recognition #stories #history #pause #culture #country #Traditionalowners
