THE MOUNTAIN CLIMBER’S MIND This tree reminds me of my mountain climbing friends. They have superpowers that I don’t have, and that I will never know. It’s amazing to watch people climb a sheer rock face using only tiny handholds, toeholds and cracks. It just blows my mind. But what amazes me most is the way they run their mind. They process reality differently than me. Their ability to focus and relentlessly do whatever it takes to climb a rock face isn’t just about physical strength. It’s about how they run their mind. I have been accused by my family of being an extremely focused person, and perhaps they are right. But I am still in the kindergarten of focus compared with the focus exhibited by those who relentlessly climb. It’s not just their ability to focus that amazes me. It their ability to focus for long periods of time. Not just minutes and hours, but days, weeks, and even months at a time. They also are masters of positive self-talk. There’s no way you can climb a mountain telling yourself negative things. Trees have an advantage when they cling to the side of mountains. They don’t have to think. They don’t need massive powers of focus, to doubt their limits, or to tell themselves positive things. They just do their thing. I would like to spend a couple of days inside a mountain climber’s mind. I would like to hear their self-talk and spend a couple of days thinking their thoughts.
