🔬Fieldwork Chronicles: Navigating Challenges for Science🌍 Concluding a week-long methane emission research at an inactive landfill site with FluxLab colleagues, Shadman and Amirali. The goal was to use our trusty mobile survey vehicle to comb through the fenceline, identifying high methane concentrations and their sources. This has been an insightful journey, posing some unexpected challenges. Unlike active landfills with well-maintained roads, at inactive sites, it usually isn’t a top priority. Hence, smooth sailing until the weather decided to play its part. As temperatures fluctuated, navigating the fenceline roads for data collection proved tricky, especially when black ice transformed them into a skating rink. Safety became paramount, prompting us to adapt and conclude our survey earlier than expected. Despite the challenges, our commitment to scientific exploration prevailed, showcasing the resilience required in environmental studies. 🚗❄️ #EnvironmentalResearch #ScientificChallenges #MethaneEmissions #TeamWork #FieldworkAdventures #Waste #Landfill

Senior Project Scientist, Coastal Modeler | Oceanographer | Coastal & Estuarine Ecosystems | Modeling & Observations | Climate | MetOcean | Consulting
Quick update just to say I'm excited about the recent shift in my focus for Running Tide. Been with the company one year now! Through late 2023 I worked mainly on Ecosystem Services projects in coastal systems. A great example is the conference presentation I gave recently on oyster nitrogen removal and water filtration. (Image here is a plot from one of the slides; see whole deck at https://lnkd.in/eFcw6WTP ) Recently I've also become more involved with our open-ocean carbon removal activities, especially developing plans for monitoring. This involves both our suite of novel in-house engineered drifting buoys (more here https://lnkd.in/evnxmY32) and a wide range of other monitoring approaches we're investigating. There are so many diverse and powerful ocean observing technologies, advancing so quickly-- it's important to keep aware of the latest, to help find the best fit for each monitoring need.

Really pumped about this article in the NYT about post 🔥 reforestation and Mast, our clients, and the network of people working to reforest. Its concise and explains the challenges facing landowners and society as we grapple with how we connect the human economy and the natural economy. Why don’t the trees regrow? Why don’t we just plant oodles of them everywhere? Its an economists look at a supply-chain challenge versus what is occurring with our climate. I also love this article as its testament to the work of the Mast Reforestation team which has tirelessly endeavored and made meaningful progress on these challenges sand our mission of making reforestation scalable since 2016. Like all of our accomplishments at Mast, this is a testament to the incredible work, and collective effort, of the entire Mast team. https://lnkd.in/d94tvmwi
