Yesterday, I participated as a panelist on SDG synergy: holistic and inclusive approaches to development hosted by the Scottish International Development Alliance. One of the interesting questions was about how decolonizing, anti-racist and inclusive approaches play a role. The conversations are picking steam, translating it all into actions is a critical task in the sector moving forward. We still have 99% of global humanitarian and philanthropic $$ going to predominantly white-led organizations. Or that only 5.4% of US funding to Africa went directly to locally-founded and led organizations. The sector has recognized that grassroots leaders and organizations working in closest proximity to communities bring about lasting change and transformation that is unmatched. Our SDG goal synergies at Budondo Intercultural Center have shown that we not only provide care to critical cases in rural areas, but also reduce over-the-counter medical bills by 70% through social entrepreneurship and increase community resilience through population health and environment actions across 600 model households.
