As entrepreneurs, farmers rely on visualisation to plan, progress, and profit, so engaging them from Day 0 draws a visible arch from initiation to sustainability . Here's why investing your impact money and intentions in this approach matters 1. Listen to the Experts: Farmers possess invaluable land, soil, and local climate knowledge. We tap into their expertise by involving them in sapling selection, ensuring the chosen tree species are well-suited to the environment. 2. Meaningful Inclusivity: Inclusion fosters trust. When farmers are an integral part of the decision-making process, they have a stake in the project's success. This trust translates into their commitment to nurturing the saplings. 3. Lasting and Evolving Impact: Our collaboration with farmers extends beyond tree-planting support via farmer learning sessions, on-ground knowledge support, and natural farming transitional check-ins. It paves the way for intervention to be relevant, build longevity and recall the farmer's and their community's resilience. 4. Transparency: Humans nurture what they care for, what they want, and what aligns with their value systems, so when they pick saplings for their land, it creates a behavioural caveat to our intervention. As a result, it reduces the risk of loss of ownership, dispels the perception of tree plantations as a "charity", and promotes the idea of "partnerships." Global partnership for sustainable aquaculture (SDG 17): The 3 year, 3 million Euro, 300 small holder farmers commercialized tilapia out grower project was officially launched at Cold Springs Hotel, Homabay Kenya. Thanks to project sponsors (IDH, Aller Aqua and Bayrise Fish Farm), and project partners (Equity Bank Limited, certified fingerlings producers, and off takers). The project design is centered around a sustainable business model of fish production with people, planet and shared prosperity at it’s core. The project seeks to demonstrate that Small Holder Farmers can become profitable and contribute to food security, gender balanced job creation and economic empowerment for all, including youth and women. This challenge is intensified by World Bank data showing that 80% of the world's poor reside in rural areas and are heavily reliant on agriculture. Additionally, climate change poses a threat, potentially reducing crop yields by up to 25%. As leaders in rural development, we strive to innovate and invest in resilient, sustainable farming practices to ensure food security and alleviate poverty. IIRR, in collaboration with various partners, is at the forefront of addressing these critical issues through innovative and sustainable solutions: Climate-Resilient Agriculture: We train farmers in climate-smart practices, such as cultivating drought-resistant crops and implementing sustainable water management, to enhance productivity and resilience. Community Seed Banks: By establishing local seed banks, IIRR ensures that farmers have access to diverse, high-quality seeds, promoting food security and biodiversity. Agroforestry Projects: IIRR's agroforestry initiatives integrate trees into farming systems to improve soil health, increase crop yields, and provide additional income sources for rural communities. Cocoa producers face many challenges from price drops to changing weather conditions, directly affecting their income. In search of better soil, farmers are moving deeper into the forest, cutting down trees to free up space for other crops 🍃. ✅ The goal? Working with Fairtrade certified cocoa producers in Ghana to improve their livelihoods in a sustainable way, preserve local natural resources, and avoid deforestation. 👉 How? By implementing agroforestry practices, that is mixing various types of crops, fauna and flora to increase yields and sustainability.
