The Minerals Security Partnership (MSP) is delivering on expanding business opportunities in the minerals resource space, which has economic benefits and demonstrates our efforts to secure critical minerals supply chains. With the support of #MSP, 🇧🇪 Umicore and 🇨🇩 Gecamines S.A. finalized a cooperation on germanium productions and offtake, increasing diverse and resilient supply chains, local value-addition, and beneficiation in places like the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Germanium, used in semiconductors, optical cables, solar cells, and more, is an example mineral that touches daily lives. Yesterday I attended Critical Minerals session at the Innovation Zero conference. Thousands of people gathered in beautiful Olympia center to discuss technologies leading us into sustainable future. The most important observation I made is the glaring absence of mining industry at the event. Oil & Gas, Alternative energy, Utilities, Agriculture, Construction, Recycling are there in full force, but mining was discussed in a small room in the corner for 1.5 hours. At a table with Lego model representing undersea power cable system I talked to the representative of the company pioneering this brave project, which will transmit power between UK, Netherlands and Norway with great efficiency. I asked her if she was aware of the looming copper shortage. She was not. I then asked her about delivery times for copper cables. Of that she was acutely aware - the waiting times are very long! But the thought never flows further upstream, into the copper mine. We, as an industry, should be present at events such as Innovation Zero and make a point of sharing our knowledge of resources and the challenges we face. #mining #criticalminerals #innovation #energy

𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱? As companies pursue net-zero targets, global demand for lithium is surging. By 2030, demand is expected to exceed 2 million metric tons, creating a significant shortfall. This gap is critical as even if all projects expected by 2030 are realized, a deficit of 220,000 metric tons will still exist. By 2025, 84% of all lithium will be used in batteries for EVs, energy storage systems (ESS), and portable electronics, highlighting its pivotal role in clean energy technologies. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀: It can take nearly a decade for mining projects to reach full capacity, with projected supply still falling short of demand and significant deficits if higher production levels are not achieved. 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Investments in sustainable mining practices and formalization of artisanal mining could mitigate environmental impacts and enhance supply. For example, formalizing artisanal mining could double or even quintuple productivity, providing a crucial supply source while supporting local economies.
