This map may not be as cute and cuddly as our regularly scheduled programming, but it tells an important message about access to veterinary care in our community. It shows that an estimated 41,000 unspayed/unneutered pets live in Davidson County (where we are located) with families with an annual household income of $25,000 or less. This does not account for the number of unspayed/unneutered animals in households with an income over $25,000 who may also struggle to afford or access spay/neuter services. You'll notice that areas of the county with a higher concentration of low-income households have few to no veterinary clinics. That's why we specifically target those areas through our Pets for Life and Food Security Programs to bring access to pet care and supplies to those who need it most. Grantmaker Foxwynd Foundation Invests in Lehigh Valley Humane Society to Save and Improve the Lives of Pets in the Lehigh Valley Allentown, PA (September 10, 2024) – Lehigh Valley Humane Society (LVHS) has received a $50,000 grant investment from the Foxwynd Foundation in support of their lifesaving work for animals in the Lehigh Valley. A $50,000 investment from the Foxwynd Foundation will support Addie’s Fund, which subsidizes the cost of services provided through the LVHS Community Vet Clinic program, enabling these services to remain affordable to our constituents. This grant investment will significantly offset the cost of expensive, complex surgeries for pets in dire need of care. The mission of the Foxwynd Foundation is to act as a lifeline for communities in need by enhancing access to key pillars of human dignity and potential such as healthcare, housing, and sustainable environmental initiatives. The Foxwynd Foundation DAF (donor-advised fund) funded the Foxwynd Foundation’s generous donation to Lehigh Valley Humane Society. "We are proud to support the Lehigh Valley Humane Society’s lifesaving work. By investing in Addie’s Fund, we help ensure that families can keep their pets healthy and at home, regardless of financial challenges. The Foxwynd Foundation is dedicated to enhancing access to essential services, and we are excited to partner with LVHS in making a difference for pets and their families,” said Pamela Villagra, Foxwynd Foundation.  “We at the LVHS are very appreciative of the Foxwynd’s Foundations support and belief in our mission. Save a Dog With Your Pacemaker – How to Donate Do you have a pacemaker, or do you know someone that does? You can make a difference in a dog’s life. You are not allowed to donate pacemakers to people, but you may be surprised to find out they can be donated to a dog. Dogs can use pacemakers just like humans, and a human pacemaker works in dogs. Best of all, humans can leave a note in their will to allow the pacemaker to be removed and donated to save a dog’s life. And there are plenty of dogs that need pacemakers.   One study from the University of Minnesota showed that 86% of dogs survived up to a year after the pacemaker was installed, with a 65% survival rate three years later. And this study from the NIH showed dogs that have atrial standstill survived 866 days longer because of the pacemakers. Donating a human pacemaker to a dog can give the furry friend a second lease of life. Whether your pacemaker can be donated depends on a number of factors, including the battery life left and its age. Your doctor and the veterinary clinic you work with can help you understand whether your pacemaker is eligible for donation to a pup. There are two common ways people transfer their pacemakers to a dog. The first is to have your will modified so that when you pass away, there are instructions to have it removed and sent to the clinic of your choice. The other is to request your doctor save the pacemaker for donation when yours is being replaced or upgraded. There is no shortage of programs and places you can donate your pacemaker to in order to save a dog’s life: Your local veterinary hospital where they perform heart surgeries Local animal shelters can provide you with options if they have partnerships with medical facilities Colleges and universities with veterinary medicine programs When your pacemaker is no longer needed for your life, see if you can give life to another by donating it to a furry friend!

Meet our current and exceptional Veterinary Social Workers who work at the heart of our mission, bridging the gap between veterinary care and human social services 🐾 Leesa 🐾 Alyce 🐾 Jessica We’ve had 14 social work students on placement of which we have gone on to employ six. In 2023, we delivered over 2000 veterinary social work services! 🙌 But what do this amazing team do exactly? Working on-site, our Veterinary Social Workers collaborate with our veterinary teams to support people while pets are cared for. This enables our vet teams to focus on animal care, while our social workers support vulnerable clients and connect with social service agencies. With this support, individuals avoid more severe outcomes - such as increased isolation, worsening mental health conditions, or potential harm to themselves or their pets. And by providing accessible and timely support, our services preempt the need for costly downstream interventions such as emergency veterinary surgeries, prolonged medical treatments, or surrendering pets to shelters or worse, which have significant financial and emotional costs for individuals and society. With our social service agency partners reporting an 83% improvement in clients’ access to veterinary care and a remarkable 94% stating positive outcomes from the support provided, it is evident that vulnerable people with pets need to be appropriately supported to help meet their companion animal’s needs as well as their own. As a result, all participating shelters reported an increase in adoptions, volunteer enthusiasm, public interest, and social engagement. "Dog DNA testing is such a powerful tool to help shelter dogs find long-term homes. Not only do breed results help adopters better understand their dog's behavioral, nutritional, and exercise needs, but they also provide crucial information about veterinary care," said Embark Executive Vice President of Research and Development Dr. David Haworth, DVM, PhD. As a veterinarian, I’ve always been passionate about providing the best possible care for animals. During my career, I’ve witnessed the disparity in access to specialized veterinary services, especially in underserved communities. I am aware of the cases that don’t even make it to the door of a specified to financial concerns. As a foreign veterinarian I did not have the privilege to be trained by veterinary specialists and in my time traveling the world as a speaker, I’ve seen first hand the hunger for knowledge that veterinary professionals have to provide specialty-level care to their patients. That’s why I founded GIVE—to bridge this gap and ensure that every pet, regardless of where they live or their owner’s financial situation, receives top-tier veterinary care. It’s about more than just treating animals; it’s about empowering local veterinarians with advanced training and resources so they can continue providing this level of care long after we’ve left.
