Meet June Dershewitz, Data Strategy at Amazon Music | Board Member at Digital Analytics Association! Tell us a little bit about yourself! Hi, I'm June. I've worked in data and analytics my entire 25-year career. Currently I'm a nonprofit board member, an angel investor in data startups, and a data leader at a large tech company headquartered in Seattle. I'm working on building science-based metrics for A/B testing, improving data quality in a systematic way, and getting executives to recognize the value of analytics. I'm also a mom to a teenage daughter.  What motivated your career in Analytics? I've always been interested in using data to understand how the world works. My natural curiosity carried me into analytics. I was also fortunate enough to have a good family role model, my dad, who spent his career developing databases at Intel. He encouraged my brother and me to learn how to code when we were kids, and now both of us have careers in tech. Thanks, Dad. What are you most looking forward to during this year’s conference? I'm looking forward to being inspired by so many unique and talented analytics practitioners who may not fit the mold of the colleagues and leaders we all see in our day-to-day lives. I think of WiAC as a place where we can come together and learn from one another. What do you want participants to take away from this year’s conference? When I attended the last face-to-face WiAC back in 2019, the best thing I took away from the conference was a simple bit of advice that I picked up in a hallway conversation with another participant. Had a great day yesterday at #DIGITWest by DIGIT.FYI - really busy hall with some great stands, and some very interesting chats: Andrew Strain from AAC Clyde Space and Hazel Jeffrey from Craft Prospect delivered a great presentation on Space Tech - a lot of it went over my head but it gave an incredible overview of what space and satellite technology can actually bring (and after trying to explain the gist of it to my 5 year old son, his interest in space has grown 10 fold!). Caroline McDowall led a brilliant panel talking about building technical teams, being a leader, DEI, the importance of a strong company culture, and avoiding burnout (not recovering from it!) with Shalini Goyal, Rich Wilson, Myra Fulton and Lianne McGrory. It's important to remember that the people leading are also people, that can make human errors while balancing the needs of the teams with that of the business. I then also sat in on a panel discussion about Data Innovation and building data teams, where Robin Huggins, Euan Wielewski, Elizabeth Hollinger, Athena Zitrou and Mark Hunter discussed attracting data talent in the fast-changing world of data and machine learning. Really interesting to hear the difference in approach to data from newer companies built around data vs more established, larger, corporations. Also lovely, as always, to catch up with some familiar faces! Looking forward to the next one 😊 PS.
